Thrice – In Exile Lyrics 15 years ago
Maybe this will clear up some confusion.

1st Corinthians 13:12 is a verse in the Bible that talks about having an imperfect understanding of life and God. However, in heaven, things will be clear. Here's the NIV translation of the verse: "Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."

Here's the song lyrics: "All I've seen is just a glimmer in just a shadowy mirror
But I know one day we'll see face to face." They are so similar, you'd have a very hard time arguing that Dustin wasn't referencing this verse when he wrote his lyrics.

The parts where he talks about being a nomad and wanderer, and not having any where to lay his head are also direct biblical references. He just expanded them a bit. 1st Peter 2:11 says, "Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul." He's trying to make his way through a world that he doesn't understand so that he can reach the place he's longed for all of his life. That place is Heaven.

Hope that helps

Haha, the "right-wing crackpot" seems to have a point here.

You all have got the overall meaning completely right. I really liked the lines:

Halogen, the lights will flicker
Incandescent burning lies

It compares the "fake" light given off by the halogen lamps to the "comfort" found in worldly things and the "real" light from the sun to the safety of Christ's love.

Pennywise – One Reason Lyrics 17 years ago
I relate it to a couple friends I have that are messing up their lives and relationships. Others of us have been trying for so long to help them out that we're completely fed up with them, and now we're asking for just one reason to keep trying to help them... or even be their friend.

He also talks about putting on a mask to hide a mix of pain and pride. Seems like he's saying this person is putting on a stone face so no one really knows what's going on with them.

I don't know if that's what the song is really about, but that is a clear picture in my mind when hearing this song.

I tend to agree with n0tfamus about most of the meaning. I don't know that I agree with the politcal statements made (it took more than a president to go to war) but this seems to be a 9/11 song bashing the decision to go to war.

I'm disappointed in the song to be honest. Most, if not all, Thrice songs tend to have more of a timeless truth to them. This one really seems to focus on a specific point in time. Maybe I'll change my mind after hearing the whole album.

MarZi, this song is obviously about God. Let me explain why. The last lines, "Scales drop from once blind eyes / We turn and glorify" are a very clear reference to Saul/Paul in Acts. Read Acts 9:1-30 (specifically verse 18) and you will see it. Trying to say that this song is not reference to that passage is like saying that a song with the lyrics, "Through the looking glass," doesn't refer to Alice in Wonderland. It's nearly impossible.

For a lot of us, the most important things in our lives show through in everything we do. For many christians, our faith is the most important thing in our lives. So, while a writer may not write this song about a specific passage or story from the Bible, doesn't it stand to reason that Dustin's faith might still show through in most if not all of his songs?

He talks about putting you faith in more than steel, the material that we use to build our car frames and building frames... the material that we think will keep us safe. He says to put your faith in more than that. What is left to put your faith in. Titanium? No. That line, once you look at all its layers, is telling you that if you rely on yourself, you efforts will eventually fail. The only way to be safe forever is through something bigger than yourself, and not of yourself. The only thing I know of that matches that description is God. It's up to you to decide if God exists.

The first stanza talks about things that man will accomplish. He says sand will cover them. He's giving you a visual picture about them being covered with dust and buried, but also, he's talking about sand running through and hour glass. He's saying nothing you can build will stand up to eternity.

Finally, I think the line, "Don't store your treasures up, with moth and rust" is a quote from the Bible. If you care to know where it is, e-mail me and I'll look it up. Sorry for being long winded.

Try this: Dustin (or the narrator of the song) is a long way from his girl/wife. He can only talk to her over the phone cuz he's always on the road. Suddenly, she's in front of him. But he's dreaming... I don't know, doesn't make sense with the part about being in slow motion, or his eyes being open... but what do you think?

Thrice – Like Moths To Flame Lyrics 20 years ago
This is the first song on the new album to make me say, "wow." The way it builds up from beginning to end is great. It is from Peter's perspective. It starts talking about the Passover (bitter herbs) and then goes to the Last Supper (bread and wine) and then Jesus tells Peter that everyone will leave him, even Peter. Peter can't believe it. In the last stanza, Peter is lost and confused after Jesus is taken into custody. Hey disowns Jesus three times, and then Jesus is lead past him, their eyes meet and the rooster crows just like Jesus told Peter it would (the aweful sound, the sound of prophesy fulfilled.) Love this song!
