I think its quite sad that I underate and therefore overlook so many bands that have been around for a while. This band being one of them. I used to write them off as just a band for chicks to like. One time in a communications class back in like '04, or maybe a English class in '06??? Anyway, this girl got up and did a presentation over Death Cab and some of there lyrics and honestly nearly bored me to death, and all I could think was "They sure as hell aint no Modest Mouse". Its funny how one bad experience with a band can create a stupid ass bias in you. Especially when you yourself is against biasis as a personal life philosophy to begin with. I think they came out with a crapy song or album in the 90's or early 2000's and it was a rap for me ever since! Anyway, regarding the song... I think its a great song with a great musical structure/ arrangement. I have had a new found discovery in the song writing that whatever his name is institutes as well. The grapevine fires are actually a metaphor for society. In what way? You figure it out because I do not feel like typing the full explanation of it, or my take on it anyway (lol). I know for a fact that they are a metaphor inspired by a true event though. By the way; "Tiny Vessels" has to be THE greatest song they have written/ performed to date!!! But this one is truly a masterpeice within its own right though! |

| How simple minded it is of us to simply make the assumption that an artist always bases his materials on himself! I would agree that much of the time, a artist's work is inspired by a personal instance, however this does not necessarily have to always be so, and inspiration does not have to drawn from personal note in its entirety. In reference to earlier postings which were stated so confidant and "as a matter of fact"ly , the nature of the lead singer, Isaac Brock's incarceration and the nature of the narrator of this song were different in entirety. Check out the details of it and then check out my next posting which will be my own interpretation of this songs meaning. Many times I feel that individuals on this sight swoon far to much over the possibility of making themselves notable and asserting a higher sense of intelligence over there counterparts instead of doing what the site is meant for them to do and just interpret the meaning of the f'iin song! At an eyes glance or an ears initial listening, it does seem like there are some homosexual connotations in this song. But for those who know me from my prior posts, I always try and look at things in a more literary in depth way. I think this song is about a boy dealing with heartbreak that is a result of him attempting the sanctity of marriage at to early of an age. Hence, the "charming man" telling him to "return the rings". The young man is apt to take his advice due to the "Charming Man's" (or lets just call him Mr. Charming for the sake of interpretation), age and wisdom that he apparently has over the heartbroken young lad. Hence "he knows so much about these things". Mr. Charming is telling him not to put forth an effort, to just give up on his aspirations of marriage at this point and return the engagement rings for both him and her and get his money back. However; I do not eliminate the possibility of Mr. Charming being a homosexual disguised as a concerned stranger (he is definitely a stranger because he is refered to as "this charming man" so matter of factly as if the young boy is relaying the story to someone else), as many homosexuals are often known to do (no offense or prejudice implied, honestly). But this does not necessarily mean that Mr. Charming is indeed gay. He could be simply trying to take him out, cheer him up, or render sicere friendly advice, gay or not, with no hidden objectives in mind. "Hey lets go out, get your mind off of it." "No, because Im not really feeling up to it, besides I have no clothes to put on....." "Man, you're a good lookin guy, you can get a woman or two to hit on..." etc. etc. |

All right Stop the press!!!! Come on people! Some of these responses a very dissappointing. Many of you (whom I will mention later), had very intelligent insight though. Firstly, he's not really taking an atheist, or religious standpoint in this song. It somehow seems that he is having a dream, or is just in deep thought, more than likely somewhere by himself. And during this period he is saying "man, it sure is hard to imagine that if nothing goes on, it still can be fun there". One must understand that we, as human beings, thrive off of energy, we thrive off of spontanaeity, not knowing what is next. And dont get me wrong, Im no atheist at all, but the man does have a point. And just because you may not be an atheist, and happen to like TH, doesnt mean that you have to twist what he's trying to say. Think of it like this. Many people tend to think that all Angels are good, and have our best intentions in mind. However, if they knew at all about biblical history, then they would have a slightly different outlook. After all, Satan is an angel, and he was not the only angel that was casted from heaven. It was a whole "band" of them. The reason why they were casted down at that time, is because they wouldnt prostrate themselves to us (humans) when The Most High asked them to do so. So at this point they were allready envious. Then later in Biblical history, they began to env y us more. You know why? Because, they know exactly how thier day is going to go at the start of every day. And their days basically consist of runing behind us, cleaning our asses of every boo boo we make. We on the other hand, have no knowledge of the turn of events during the coarse of our day, and life is alot more interesting for us. Its easy for us to be bored, because life is so interesting. And that my friends, is the reason why the angels envy us. Now back to the song, he is saying that life can get boring enough, and if nothing ever goes on, right or wrong, then its hard to imagine Heaven being a desirable place. And like someone on here once said, its almost like torture. And its very inconcievable to him, and he's just merely stating that. In a very cleaver way I may add. |

one of there best songs ever by mm. no doubt. I read a comment on the previous page wich stated that he used to be a truck driver. I dont know how true it is but it makes alot of sense since most of there albums have undertones of some type of journey. I think he made the connection between lifes journey and actuall road traveling and ran with it. From dramamine to truckers atlas there all are metaphores of the journey of life, regardless of the drugs and all. This album came out when I was in the 9th grade. Now aint that somethin. I had no clue who they were back then. |

| This song is a suicide letter. The guy narrating found that Daphne was engaging in a lustfull relationship with someone else. "you can fall back on lust when you learn to wait." He apparently kills himself in her room wherever she resides. "you will know that you breath my vapors everytime that you pass through this room" Meaning his spirit will forever reside in her sleeping chambers. The guy is very hurt and bitter behind the reality of her infidelity and wishes to pay her back, ultimately by his death. Caint be sure how he did it but it must have been very gruesome, my guess is that he blew himself away in that room. The image forever sketched in her mind of how she discovered his body. I make this assumption because of the last line of the song. "Im still enjoying this, thats why I made a mess!" He enjoys her torment even in death. | |

The song is about a man who decided to say "screw it" and live his life how he wants to live it. "they got a name for the winners in the world, well I want a name when I lose". So many times in life, we dont actually live life because we are all so pre-disposed of all the stuff that dont really matter, that doesnt really give us true happiness in this world. This may be through jobs, family , friends, etc. The guy more than likely had a corporate job, and in the firstt verse he is probably talking to a girl friend or a wife. "that shape is my shame there where I used to stand", his job, and , "so useless to ask me why throw a kiss and say goodbye". His girl. I allways felt this song to be genius for one because he uses the allegories (or whatever literal term you'd like to dub it) of day and night. The first phase is of day "this is the day of the expanding man", which symbolizes the begining of of his transformation from what is typically seen as normal, to 'what he wants to be'. The last phase starts with "the night of the expanding man", signifing symbolizm of his exodus from this realm to the next (his death), from what is seen to be a self destructive life. At any rate Ill stop here because I could write a whole damn essay over this one song, but I will grant you the privelege of entertaining the fact that this song is about a man whom though may be seen as self destructive, took his fate in his own possession. Now Im not saying be a bum, or even drink and drive, and I dont believe Fagen is either. But ask yourself this question..........ARE YOU BEING WHAT, OR WHO YOU WANT TO BE???? |

Pretty deep Writingismyreligion, but I see the direct opposite. It goes like this. Katy is the drug, you know how being with a certain person can be. Women can easily be personified to us men as a type of drug. In the begining he starts off saying "Katy Tries". Meaning that that drug will do anything to bring you down, no matter how much you try to controll her. And Faegan was "on the other side of no tommorow". Faegan gives us direct notion that Dr. Wu is an actuall man, "are you really just a shadow of the man that I once knew". Dr. Wu, helps him get on his feet, and they developed a very close friendship, singing songs together, hanging out, etc. But then Faegan finds out that he got addicted to dope as well, and it was really a shatter to his stability because he used to look up to the doc, his shrink. Drugs and alcohol can be like a relationship. Or dependency on anything for that matter. In a relationship you try to keep control over your lover, but if your not careful, your lover can turn the tables on you and have you under her/ his thumb. It can very easily happen. The same with your drug of choice. She does lie but, hell, Im about to go get on me some Katy right now! :) |

I dont think theres anything in the song that hints at anyone being mad at anyone. I think its more mature than this. Firstly she says "I know what I know" meaning that she basically has such a deep and intelligent understanding of relationships (more than likely through experience). And what she knows is that he is indeed seeing someone else. Not just screwing around, but he is actually developing some deep feelings for the other "one". The other chick more than likely knows about Karen as well, but probably lingers in the back until the final outcome. To sum it all up Karen knows that the guy loves her from the 'weve been together all these years' aspect but the flame ran out whether it be from arguments or whatever. Karen also knows that the other girl will turn into the only thing he ever knew, as to say that in time he wont have to feel bad about leaving Karen as much, just as time heals all other wounds to. Shes not trying to convince the guy to stay with her because she knows that she messed up with him in the past with maybe lack of attention, or arguing, or nagging, and kind of pushed him away. As well, he probably did his share to. This may be far fetched for some, but how would you explain not being made that your significant other fell for someone else? Anyway, Karen can tell the guy is really confused. Should he stay in this same old worn out relationship acting happy and guessing what could have happened with the 'other girl', or should he go ahead and face the pain of loosing his long time companion, Karen, and will the other girl screw him. Karen is hurt as well, but she is really making it a little easier for both of them by just setting him free because the fact that she allready knows, and the fact that he caint tell her is eating them both inside. Before she probably kept this from him and hoped that it would maybe just go away or whatever, but know the same look he had in his eyes when he and Karen were fresh is the same look he has now.........."caint say why I kept this from ya, my those quiet eyes become ya". She probably caught him daydreaming a couple of times or something. Or maybe she can see in his eyes that his internal confusion and turmoil is slowly deteriorating him because he truly loves Karen, but caint help the way he feels about the 'other girl'. Try listening to it after reading this and see if it makes sense. Its basically a mature and understanding break up song. So the moral is.... well it could go south really quick so do what you can while you still have his, or her attention. |

It was kind of weird though because around the time when I had first picked up the MMM FOOD album, and consequently heard this song, this chick I had started hoeing for some pimp she ran off with. I guess I should have "made her feel cuter nad lay down the G like Lutha". ANd everything would have been "Supa" . Its bugged out how the time this song came to me all of this was going on. | weeds are plants that are very seldomnly left alone if seen. the whole song is symbolic of that very point in reference to life. this means that life is hard enough to survive without someone always plucking you up. but for every soul that leaves this plain, another is sure to come, just as weeds always come back no matter how much plucking you do. however, they cannot usually grow under rocks. this is the reason why you always see rocks in gardens. but anywho, the rock is someone that he cant really stand, but for some reason has to deal with. could be a girlfreind (no matter how cliche'), or it could be a boss or anything. no one can ever actually know facts such as these unless obtained through conversation with the actual song writer. but whomever this person is, there just always talking, but never have anything to say. "all this talking all the time and the air fills up until there is nothing left to breath". My take on the song is that its about someone whom was very dependent emtionally on another. "The Monkey" is in reference to the old saying tha "the monkey on my back". This old refers to problems, day to day, that we all deal with as normal people. If Im in a financial bind and someone asks me how Im doing, then I may reply "I got the 'monkey' on my back man", and so on. But aside from the "hello me, are you in there" line, I really do believe that the song is actually about a girl that sank into a deep depression over a guy whom she apparently had a deep involvment with, but in the end she found that her castle was built of mere sand, or in other words he put on a big front of what he was all about. "he sold you a dream, and carved you up like meat". He "locked her heart behind mars because she doesnt even want to think about moving on and in turn, therefore opening her heart to someone else. Furthermore, I tink its about a heart break, because in the corus it says "dont try to ask a doctor whats going on inside your head". Now we all know that there are many treatments for almost ailment, desease, sickness, whatever, but theres no medicine for a heartache. So when she "awoke to his game" that he was playing on her, "The Monkey" saw an invitation to climb aboard, and shes been gradually rolls down hill from there. |

| I think it says butterfly, it doesnt even sound like buttercup to me. But this is a band of such genius that its hard to say what the best song that they have put out is. Not only the lyrics which are genius, but the music behind the lyrics also. Not to beat a dead horse, but I think the song is about basically that feeling that you get when you meet someone and you think there the best thing in the world. I THINK THIS SONG IS ABOUT 3 FREINDS THAT APPARENTLY HAVE A PRETTY TIGHT TRIANGLE AMONGST THEM. tHEY PROBABLY DUBED THEMSELVES AS "THE BOSTON RAG". FAGAN, OR WHOMEVER IS TELLING THE STORY WAS HIGH OUT OF HIS MIND IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THE SONG, AND THE GIRL (?) WAS ON THE PHONE WITH THE BIG DRUG DEALER NAMED LONNIE (WHOM IS APPARENTLY PART OF THE TRIANGLE OF FRIENDS). IN THE SECOND PHASE OF TE SONG, SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED TO THE GIRL. M THINKING SHE BECAME A PROSTITUTE OR SOMETHING "LADY BAYSIDE" AND THIS EFFECTED LONNIE SO BADLY THAT HE WENT TO A DRUG HOUSE AND TOOK EVERYTHING IN SIGHT. "LONNIE SWEPT THE PLAY ROOM, AND HE SWALLOWED UP ALL HE FOUND". HE APPARENTLY OVERDOSED AND WAS IN A COMMA FOR 2 DAYS, "IT WAS 48 HOURS TILL LONNIE CAME AROUND". SOME PRETTY TRAGIC STUFF MAN, BUT ITS SOME PEOPLES REALITY. ANYWAY, I FEEL THAT THIS SONG IS WAY UNDERATED! IT MAKES ME EMOTIONAL EVERYTIME I HEAR IT, AND THE STORY THAT UNFOLDS OVER TE MUSIC.
