The National – Racing Like a Pro Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually the more I think about this song, it could almost be the wife's perspective from "Baby". I'm sure it wasn't intended that way but it totally works.

This reminds me a lot of Baby, We'll Be Fine from Alligator. At least thematically. About a guy who is "shooting up the ladder" in his company.

Baby we'll be fine was from a first person perspective but this seems to be in second person, as if they are talking about the same person. In my opinion these two songs are the best on both albums. Man, the national have really smart, emotive lyrics. Beautiful.

For me, this is the best song of Alligator. Just listening to it the other day I got all choked up when he sings "I don't know how to do this". It's such a vulnerable declaration. It's completely heartbreaking this song.

The first part of the song definitely seems the person trying to find justification in life through his work life which he never gets. And this may be because of his relationship with his wife. I haven't heard such a complex and nuanced song about a relationship in a while.

Love love love this song.

Elliott Smith – High Times Lyrics 20 years ago
I signed up here because no-one had commented on this song. I've just heard the Basement B-sides and this is easily the best track there.
Much alike 2:45am it builds to somewhat of a crescendo but I think this is much more effective. Looking at the lyrics doesn't really give justice to how the song really is or how it makes me feel.
A feel a sense of desperation in the song. The line "yeah I feel fine" couldn't be sung in a less convincing way.

But the line that leaves me breathless everytime is:
"i was so sick and tired tryin to change your mind
when its so easy to disconnect mine"

God damn I love Elliot.
