It's almost impossible to park anywhere besides your hotel, and there are so many traffic lights, that everyone walks everywhere. I agree with everyone, that it's about how he misses his girl at home...but by the end, "All my time spent wondering Why I stay true to you 'Cause you're not here, and now it's clear I'm never going back to you." It sounds like he's saying 'I try so extremely hard for you even when I'm out touring, but you don't have the patience to wait for me' ...it implies she has cheated on him and he kinda knows, hence he's never going back to her |

In the beginning of the version I have, he says: "This next song I'm about to play for you, it's a really tricky one and I didn't think it was going to be on the record, but I really really really fought. I don't think there was a harder fought song that had been put on a record before. It's a really tricky topic. Y'know, you write a song called 'belief', and you better be careful. It took me a lnog time to choose my words correctly unlike the rest of my life. And I ran into Ben Harper one night, actually the night I decided to finish this song. Very kinda senedipidous, asked him if he'd play on it, and he really kinda drove the song home for me, and um, with him on it, it is now officially now I feel the song is really really kinda gritty. And thanks to Ben Harper, this is a song 'belief'. Enjoy" I'm not sure if that helps anyone's interpretation, just wanted to put that info out there. |

At first I thought it was about someone who is in love with a past relationship, but it says "us" and "we" instead of "me" and "I"...So it sounds like the singer/singers are talking to their dad (I'm going to say dad thru this comment, but it could be any guardian/role model) who left. [The parts where the chorus repeats, I only wrote it once] "Alone at last, sleeping to help ease my pain." ^ He sleeps to keep his mind off of it. "and i take it back, you'll never be this close to me." He is resentful for feeling so close to this now-absent person "and i breathe in deep; helps me avoid the state you put me in. and now that i can deal, with everything you've thrown at me." He says he is getting more used to not having this person in his life, and he knows he can deal with the problems that came as a result of this person leaving. "how does it feel to know that you could never fix the way that we see. the way you left us without any reasoning, without reasoning." He asks what the dad thinks of the singers/narrators after the dad has left them emotionally hurt "i lay you to rest, in my head stored away never to return. i'll forget everything you left back at home. please know i'm always looking back on our scripted memories." He tries to put the memories aside and forget about everything, but he says to the dad "Please realize I think our memories were fake" "look at how i've grown, just see, these burdens you put on us helped guide me to be, the man i was supposed to be." Even though the rest of the song so far says how hurt he is and how hard it is for him to get around this, now he says 'well, hey look how well I've turned out without you.' "he breathes in deep, helps him realize how everything in his whole life progressed. he's fine i swear" The 2nd singer...maybe the other person referred to in 'us'...says how the first singer seems to be "and he'll confess.. to you cause tonight he'll find his was back home." 2nd singer says that the first singer willingly confessed how he feels because he knows that he can go on living even without the dad. "forget about the plans we made i'll never let this go." 1st singer- Forget of the past things we planned to do (as a family, possibly?) because I'm not going to forgive what you've done (leaving him) "broken faith and wasted breath, photographs are all thats left. of you..of you" Broken faith- the singer(s) had faith in their dad...Because in a perfect world, a little boy's role model is his dad Wasted breath - trying to beg the dad not to leave and/or to come back again The dad didn't come back, and photos are the only way the boys remember the good times with their dad "(we've come along way to look back on you right now)" Both boys/singers are saying they have grown up and it's been a long time since the dad was there. "(we've spent too many days trying to find you out)" They tried so hard to make it(the dad leaving) make sense "(we still hold close to us our memories of you..of you)" They value the memories...because they know the memories will be there even if the dad isn't. Just a theory. |

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this one is pretty straightforward... "Your picture in my hand And I am at the mercy of your photograph " He is in love with her. The stumbling kinda implies that he is literally "weak at the knees" for her.
