| I absolutely love this song - but does anyone know what "demi-format" means? | |

Such a good song, lyrically as well as musically. I think especially this part: If she weren't writing in blood She'd bring him her jokes A new liver And a shovel for the mud If he were not knee-deep in mud He'd bring her his drugs He'd get her a typewriter is really clever, the way it relates the lines "If she weren't writing in blood, she'd bring him ... a shovel for the mud" and "If he were not knee-deep in mud, he'd get her a typewriter." (presumably so she wouldn't have to write in blood.) I think it's saying, like, if the two people weren't too involved in their own problems and in their own situations, they would be able to help each other. It kind of in an abstract way reminds me of that story about how a woman cut and sold her hair to afford a chain for her husband's pocket watch, not knowing that he had sold the watch to buy her a comb for her hair. Except, in this song it's kind of the opposite, or something - I don't know. That's what it reminded me of, though. |

| I definitely think this song is about feminism, for reasons already mentioned, but to get more into the last part - the repeated "Every speed on our knees is crawling," which I think is brilliant - I think it refers to the fact that, no matter how far women think they've come along in the feminist movement and their quest for equalization, we're still on our knees, no matter how fast we're moving, and therefore are still in a position of submission. I think that line in particular, as well as the whole song, is saying that we shouldn't be so complacent thinking that we no longer need to fight for equal rights, because we're still "on our knees", despite the fact that we may be advancing. | |
