This song is beautiful. I listened to it several times before I decided to search who John Wayne Gacy was. One of my favorite songs. Then, after taking all of that into account and seeing some pictures of John Wayne Gacy - I was terrified. Clowns, for whatever reason, whatever mask they wear, have always scared me.
Mostly, around "he killed ten thousand people", when the higher pitches on the piano are really coming into play, it illustrates how music can sometimes tell a story so much better than words. Those sounds and the music with it haunted me the most.
So, today, I put it on repeat. And found so much more than horror in it.
The part that is still overwhelmingly chilling though, is when Sufjan asks "are you one of them?".
Which just reminds me of the nameless victims of JWG. It provokes some thought.
But, I whole-heartedly agree with the statement: "And In My Best Behavior, I Am Really Just Like Him. Look Underneath The Floor-Boards For The Secrets I Have Hid". The only reason that Gacy is worse than any of us in our daily lives is because society has deemed it so : And I do not disagree. What he did was horrid. But I'm sure you can think of a secret you keep that close to you. Underneath your floorboards (kind of makes you think of Poe, eh?).

cannibalxconscierge, yeah, there're several of those all throughout TMV songs, but I think its all more for literary illusions rather than having a literal meaning.
Wow, I'm recently addicted to the Mars Volta, I can't stop listening to this album! (Which is kind of a problem 'cause it puts me in some pretty crazy moods) But, in any case, this is what I think this song means, roughly...
This is definitely a look into the afterlife, seeing as an account on Julio's death occurs in the song before, at least. I think it's pretty obvious he's in Hell here. If you really read into Televators, there are a lot of little references to the religious views that he'll be damned for this (You should have seen the curse that flew right by you...)
Now, I still haven't really looked at this too in-depth, but, I think possibly the idea that Moatilliatta is some portrayal of Ben is a good call. Because in this song he asks "WHO BROUGHT ME HERE?" (Which is a fantastically executed line, by the way) and in the song before his death (although I think for him he may die in the end of it), This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed, he asks "is that you Motillatta? I've been waiting so long for..." etc etc, In a kind of welcoming sense because of everything he's been through, but now he's been brought "here", Hell. That's rough. Haha. Sorry, I tend to agree with all4tehlulz.

This is one of a lot of the meaningful songs on the album that really got me through some hard times. I could be completely wrong, but, to me, the meaning of this song was really clear.
I used to be a lot like what I thought this song meant. There are a lot of references to how much he doesn't like himself sometimes, when you're living your life and screwing it up, you don't really realize how much you've gone off track 'till you feel like you're too far away and you can't start over, hence the "shedding skin" reference.
It's a really true song about basically, hating yourself for the way you're conducting yourself, scaring off the people you care about, but you can't blame them, at the same time, you just don't know how to make it right again.
When I was in this situation, my favorite line was always "somedays, I pray someone will blow me away, make it quick, but let it burn, so I can feel my life fade" you can pretty much take that line at face value. This song, and a lot of the songs on the cd that follow the same pattern, are really deep, amazing songs. [= |

Well, perhaps this is far fetched, but to me, this song seems lyke it's pertaining to christianity, well, let me explain, This song sort of sounds like the life of Jesus, ((excluding a few parts that have to do with the singer)) a brief bible lesson here, when Jesus was on the cross, he had never done wrong or felt sins, but then he took everyone else's sins into him aka the song's chorus. How is this connected to the sinner's life?? well, some of you may know of the feeling you get when you just want to save someone, you would give anything you had, even if they aren't dying, just to make them okay again, well, there you go, you're sins into me.....oh my beautiful one x3

I totally agree with i-fell-into-fantasy, I can't listen to it!! and it's not even the whispering that does it...it's the creepy singing!! I listened to this song the first time when I was on my way to Florida ((long car ride)) and I was just about to go to sleep ((it being 4 am and everything)) in the back of the car, and then this song came on and I was freaked out and when I did get 2 sleep, I had a nightmare!! There's this girl and her husband? Yea, I hear the porn noises in the background,but it actually might just be crying and fighting, in the background they do say "stop the fighting!" but besides that, I really lyke this song, there's something about it that even tho he just overly repeats everything he said in "pet", it's a lot scarier....perhaps it's the sounds of wood or knives hitting eachother?? I dreampt that there was this guy and this girl and the girl was dead, or in a coma...or sumthing....and the guy just wouldn't except it. SOOO....as time went on, and this girl wasn't talking to him or nething, he got tired of it and got mad at her, and he still doesn't realize she's dead, so, he's wondering "why can't you turn and face me". This is one of my favorite songs on the cd...I think it's about someone who's wondering what's wrong with a person who's such a drama queen and they're all suicidal but they really have no reason to be. And this person is pissed, but they still care they're saying "what'll it take to get it through to you precious" so they do care...they're jus pissed....but he doesn't completely doubt what this "drama queen" is capable of, but he's tired of caring so "If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere, do it somewhere far away from here!!" I have a friend who's a "drama queen" in most people's eyes, but the sad thing is, they think she's doing it for attention...and she's not, maybe keenan should take a second look at this drama queen?? |

This song stumped me for awhile trying to figure it out...but, to me at least, I think it's about thinking you know somebody, or having feelings for them and then they do sumthing to trick you or hurt u and you jus don't feel lyke you even know them anymore, hence "a stranger" and where he says "and I listen for the whisper of your sweet insanity, while I fformulate denials of your effect on me" The person he's talking about left, and on the inside he's waiting for them to come back, but he doesn't want to, so he's "formulating denials" about how they make you feel...also, the lyrics are 'fucking tornado' I thought it was sumthing tomato for awhile too...but fucking tornado makes a lot more sence...."run away terrified child, won't you, move away, you fucking tornado, I'm better off without you tearing my will down" because tornadoes destroy everything in their path... also, I lovvve this song, it's full of emotion ((as is most everything by maynard)) but I think jus the tone in his voice or the way he says "what am I to do with all this...silence" it's haunting, but in a good way, Thirteenth step rocks, hence my user name "sweet insanity" APC Has a way of making things sound one way, but they realli have a much deeper meaning, so, I'm prolly wayyy off track here.....but *shrugs* there's my two cents... |
