This is one of hte most beatiful songs I've ever heard. I like that they don't assume "love" is exclusively romantic love, but familial and friendship-love. The song reminds me of my dad. I was such a "Daddy's girl" when I was a little kid. But, we went through some pretty rough times when I hit teenage-dom. It felt like we were always screaming at each other. Even at the worst, though, I always knew I could turn to him if I needed help. We're starting to move on from that fighting. I know we won't have a relationship like when I was younger, but I'd to be close again. |

This song seems to be about power-struggles in a relationship between a parent and kid, a group of friends, or whoever. The singer doesn't sound abused or unable to defend himself. He's waiting for his rival to fall, or the right time to bring him down himself. |

I agree that this song can be about the abused becoming the abuser, but I think there's something else. It's easy to become carried away in a fight with someone who's hurt you. You become so determined to beat them that you use the same tactics they used to hurt you. Fight fire with fire. You almost need to become the person to defeat them. I heard it summed up amazingly well a while ago:
Those who fight monsters should look to it that they do not become monsters; When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you. --Friedrich Nietzsche |

This songs reminded me of how my realtionship with my dad was for...years. I can just picture us shooting lines of the song back and forth at each other (kinda funny actually ;p) He would lose his temper alot. I'd try to stop caring about him so it wouldn't hurt so much. I'd shoot back, he'd be hurt too, and yell at me. Add this to the fact that I was such a Daddy's girl when I was younger...it wasn't fun.
Also, 2 things for Rabster:
"fuck Jesus. He isn't real" Wonderful opinion...Why in the world would you go to a message board for a CHRISTIAN band and then complain about religious beliefs. Next, why don't oyu go to a lake and complain that bteh water is too wet?
"it's about a girl" WOW! Amazing insight! Yes, every song since the '50's is about a girl, isn't it? There can't be any other meaning to it, and why would artists ever want to travel into other areas that mean something to them?? "it's about a girl" very deep, and so well explained. |

This song is about dealing with the fact that we ARE human. We're going to screw up. Even though we know this objectively, it's hard to deal with after we actually did hurt someone of fall short of our goal. All the other times we messed up come rushing back to us, and we think that if we had been a little stronger or smarted we could've done it right. |

This song describes what it feels like to me when something terrible goes wrong (something more than breaking up with a boy/girlfriend or getting into a fight with parents.) A friends dies or you lose your home. You wonder how God can let somthing like that happen. how something, someone you loved so much just...disappear. |

I think this song is talking more about friendship-love than romance-love. When things get hard, most people go to their friends for advice and support. Just being there when you're at your lowest point is considered the best test of a true friendship. That kind of bond is darn near indestructable. |
