| The Decemberists – The Legionnaire's Lament Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Charabanc is not a "thing for holding babies", it's a carriage with wooden benches! There is also no other reference to a child in this song! | |

If it's summer rain, why does it say "some rain" in the lyrics booklet in the CD? At least have the decency to buy the music not just download it. As for the guy who thinks that camel refers to a Sopwith Camel, that gave me a real good laugh!!! |

| The Decemberists – Leslie Ann Levine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is the funniest thing I've read on here for a long time....... "The baby dies 3 hours after being born. It's corpse is at some taken by a chimney sweep who lodges it in a flue. It stays there for an indeterminate amount of time til eventually being found and buried in a shallow ditch." |

otherones90210! Your analysis of this song is woeful, please if you don't know what you are talking about, just say nothing. Don't give up the day job pal! |

| The Shins – Sea Legs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The trouble is people post up their best guess for the lyrics before the album comes out, then until someone changes them, we all get stuck with incorrect lyrics. Some people obviously never buy the albums at all and yet call themselves Shins fans, I call them something else! | |
| The Shins – Kissing the Lipless Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| For all you people who "love The Shins" and think the lyric is mettle, go out and buy the album with the printed lyrics instead of just downloading the songs, you cheapskate idiots! | |
| Elliott Smith – Waltz #2 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| ednoon07, how many people do you know that send an "open mouthed kissing" symbol to their mothers? | |
| Elliott Smith – Waltz #2 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| XO means Kisses and hugs, as in something you'd write in a card, the x being the kiss and the o being the hug. | |

whj247, could you have put any less thought into that comment? Next you'll be saying that Junk Bond Trader is about someone who trades in Junk Bonds! |

| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Not every song has to be autobiographical, the song obviously has references to a Heroin addict, but why does that addict have to be Elliott? I think he should be given a bit more credit as a songwriter than that! His biography states that he didn't use Heroin til much later and none of his close friends contradict this fact. Another thing that strikes me is that only the last verse is sung in the 1st person, the first 2 verses are about someone else. This to me means that the song is about someone else that is addicted to Heroin, the last verse being sung as if he is that person. |
|
| Elliott Smith – Junk Bond Trader Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Jabbatron, if you don't know what you are talking about, it's best to say nothing at all. Elliott wasn't taking Heroin when he was in Heatmiser and in fact didn't for the next 5 - 6 years. He did however use drugs as imagery for other problems in his life, talented song writers use one thing as a metaphor for something else. Having said that, I can't find anything in this song that even vaguely resembles a reference to heroin. I believe it is about a culture of greed in society. |
|
| Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I have a strange sense when reading the posts here that drugs are fine and people are proudly boasting that they're high while they are listening to it so they're somehow cool. and Elliott's in heaven singing to the angels with Kurt Cobain. Errr, hello, back in the real world an' all that. Sorry to sound harsh but please just stop and think how unhappy drugs made Elliott, and no doubt the lives of the other junkies posting here. He killed himself in desparate, horrific circumstances and that's the end, I'm afraid I don't believe in the whole singing with angels stuff. I love his music, and find it desperately sad at times, but keep touch with reality and stop calling everyone man! |

| Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| ColdenScence, get a grip, the song as mentioned several times is about a phonebook, Coldplays lyrics are at best amateurish, and to be honest your grammar looks pretty 1st grade to me! | |

Erm it's shit not ship because the lyrics are in the CD sleeve! Perhaps some people just download, not buy Elliott's stuff! :-( |

| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Possible 2nd verse meaning: he's wearing yr clothes head down to toes a reaction to you you say you know what he did but you idiot kid you don't have a clue sometimes they just get caught in the eye you're pulling him through The dealer is dressed in shoddy clothes like her and she thinks he's just like her, but really he was always dressed like that and she has just descended to his level. She knows he got her on the drugs but she doesn't really have a clue that he's screwed up her life. Caught in the eye of a needle? Perhaps a clever reference to an OD. Whatever the meaning, a great song! |
|
| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
2nd verse - far more ambiguous 3rd verse now on the bus nearly touching this dirty retreat falling out 6th and powell a dead sweat in my teeth gonna walk walk walk four more blocks plus one in my break down downstairs to the man he's gonna make it all OK i can't beat myself i can't beat myself and i don't want to talk i'm taking the cure so i can be quiet whenever i want so leave me alone you ought to be proud that i'm getting good marks same girl on a bus to fund her dirty secret habit, staggers off the bus, 4 blocks, possibly 5 as she's confused, down some staircase to her dealer who's going to get her some relief. She's taking the drugs to escape, for some peace etc. Good marks, sarcastic reference to her parents who probably pestered her to get good marks at school, now she's getting another kind of marks on her arm. |
|
| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
1st verse is really self-explanatory to me: your hand on his arm the hay stack charm around your neck strung out and thin calling some friend trying to cash some check he's acting dumb that's what you've come to expect Girl clinging to drug dealer, hippy type wearing a charm, looks a bit of a state, calls a so called friend, who's acting like he doesn't know what she's after, as he always does coz he's fed up with her pestering him for money. |
|
| Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Not sure if anyone has said this as I haven't read all the posts. I'm convinced that "Needle in the hay" is a clever play on words for how lost you become when you are taking drugs. The needle reference is obvious and a needle in a haystack means something almost impossible to find. You can become lost to society and your friends and although they know where you are physically, they cannot "find" or "reach" you. | |
| Elliott Smith – Oh Well, Okay Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
My take on this has always been that it's Elliott singing about a girl that he fancied and it turns out she fancied him but couldn't tell him. He couldn't figure out why she was unhappy, perhaps it was that she loved him, but tdidn't know how to say it. "if you a get a feeling the next time you see me do me a favor and let me know 'cos it's hard to tell it's hard to say" ...basically, next time if you have feelings when you see me, just tell me, coz I'm not a mind reader. I'm probably completely wrong, it's just what I've always assumed! |

Jackalley - here's a thought, if you're offended by people discussing Elliott Smith's song meanings, why not avoid the Elliott Smith section of www.songmeanings.net? Some people's stupidity is quite frightening! |

| Elliott Smith – The White Lady Loves You More Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| If you read this from the point of view of a girlfriend of a drug addict (heroin or coke, who cares) it makes perfect sense. | |
| U2 – Drowning Man Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Part of the lyrics are taken from the bible.... Even the youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40v28-31 |

| Elliott Smith – Punch and Judy Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Is it just me? This is the one song on Either/Or that I don't like. Does everyone else love it? I feel so left out! :-) | |
| Elliott Smith – Roman Candle Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I don't know if anyone else has noticed but there's quite a lot of guitar at the end, after the lyrics finish, which is unusual for Elliott, when I hear that bit it's almost like he's just strumming away to wind down after all that emotion release. You can almost feel his pulse return to normal. | |
| Elliott Smith – Tomorrow Tomorrow Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Does anyone know what "straight to over" means? Not sure if I'm being a bit thick or not? |
|
| Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Yes but my point is, the word yellow isn't about any of the topics discussed here, it is purely a two syllable filler. It's not about drugs, or happiness, or Chinese women, oh God I can't stop laughing about that. | |
| Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Gray Somers, who the f*ck wastes time creating an account, just to write what you have. I think that makes you far sadder than anyone else on here. Shame you resort to bad language as well, you're obviously of low intelligence. Also your grammar leaves quite a bit to be desired. Perhaps some sort of further education course might help you out? | |
| Elliott Smith – I Didn't Understand Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
The first time I played this song, I sat alone with the CD booklet, reading the lyrics as I listened, at the end of the song I was crying. Now that has never happened before. The last couple of lines, what a sentiment, especially when you think how it all ended for Elliott. |

Read these lyrics by Elliott Smith, just to see what real songwriting is all about........ drink up baby, stay up all night the things you could do, you won't but you might the potential you'll be that you'll never see the promises you'll only make drink up with me now and forget all about the pressure of days do what i say and i'll make you okay and drive them away the images stuck in your head people you've been before that you don't want around anymore that push and shove and won't bend to your will i'll keep them still |

by me4now777 on 08-28-2005 @ 05:52:02 AM i did wonder if he was in love with a chinese woman, and maybe also chinese people and culture. he drew a line for her This is the funniest thing I have read for a long time! |

| Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Thanks for that Ciaanne, you have perfectly demonstrated my point, what bloke writes a love-song about one woman, then dedicates it to his new love, surely if the song meant anything, it would always be about his previous love? Which proves my point that the song is meaningless. Also, this site is called songmeanings, so when I see a bunch of people trying to work out the meaning of a song, I think it's helpful to point out that Chris Martin has admitted that the word Yellow comes from a Yellow phone directory that was lying around at the time. It's not about love or drugs, it's about a phonebook! |
|
| Coldplay – Don't Panic Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I think this is about a self indulgent singer, trying to think of stupid names for his kids. | |
| Coldplay – Clocks Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
"Singing, come out of things I've said, Shoot an apple off my head, And I, Trouble that can't be named, The tigers waiting to be tamed" Aaaaaaggggghhhhhh, what is this meaningless drivel? Coldplay must have some of the world's worst lyrics, please don't try to analyze them. They don't mean anything, they just rhyme! |
|
| Coldplay – Trouble Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I used to write lyrics like this, I think I was about 11 years old. | |
| Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I have to laugh at all the people trying to work out what Yellow means. Chris Martin has explained he wrote the song but needed a 2 syllable word to make it scan, he looked round the room and saw a Yellow Pages phone directory, and there you go. I think you'll find most Coldplay songs are just self-indulgent nonsense. | |
| The Chameleons – Paradiso Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I've always thought this song was about the dangers of drugs, or perhaps it's just the dreams of childhood failing to materialise. Who knows? One of my all time favourites though! | |

| The Chameleons – Tears (Full Arrangement) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Mark Burgess wrote this song about a good friend who died of cancer. I'm surprised there are no comments yet on this as this really is a moving song. Incidentally, if you don't know the Chameleons then give them a try, they must be the ultimate "overlooked" band. | |
