Dirty Pretty Things – The Enemy Lyrics 19 years ago
Aww, it's too easy though! The site isn't about giving songs praise or taking the piss out of peoples stupidity (though both are fun), it's song /meanings/ which I think I've done actually ^^.

Yeti – Never Lose Your Sense Of Wonder Lyrics 19 years ago
You can hear his influence on the band in the early days before Pete & Carl took over writing responsibilties.

Meaning - it's a basically a non-conformity song.

The Indelicates – Waiting For Pete Doherty To Die Lyrics 19 years ago
I didn't like this song at first, natural reaction for a fan "what?! how dare they!!" etc until I read an interview where the band explain *they* don't want him to die. It's more about the public views on him, reading about him in The Scum everyday, waiting for the 'junkie scum' to die.

Very catchy, especially like:-

"Someone come and tap this pain!
I haven't cried since Kurt Cobain."

Dirty Pretty Things – Last Of The Small Town Playboys Lyrics 19 years ago
I meant the guy in front was, not Pete. And this really isn't the place to argue who's better.

As for meaning.. "big fish in little ponds" from the man himself. People who expect stuff to just happen for them because 'the world owes them something'.

The Libertines – Pay The Lay Lyrics 19 years ago
Pay The Lady

Every blue song in the world has the answers
Well can I tell you in the morning?
Words mumble into soft white pillows
In that sleepy autumn dawn

We'll go to the market
(We'll go to the market)
When the good weather goes
We'll leave prints in the dusty books
And we'll steal each other clothes

There's a streetlamp on in the middle of the day
Not too far out of our way
And it's such a lovely day
What do you say?

There's a streetlamp on in the middle of the day
Not too far out of our way
It's such a lovely day
What do you say?

Well I can always
Pay the woman on my way back home
Pay her on my way
Well I'll pay the woman on my way
Well I'll pay her on my way
I'll pay the woman on my way back home
If you let me go home

Well every blue song in the world has the answers
Well can I tell you in the morning?
Words mumble into soft white pillows
In that sleepy autumn dawn

We can climb the hill
(We'll climb the hillside)
And look over our town
We'll sit and smoke and drink some tea
And watch the sun go down
We'll let the drink surround

There's a streetlamp on in the middle of the day
Not too far out of our way
It's such a lovely day
What do you say?

There's a streetlamp on in the middle of the day
Not too far out of our way
It's such a lovely day
What do you say?

I can always
Pay the woman on my way back home
Pay her on my way
I'll pay the woman on my way
Well I'll pay her on my way
Pay the woman on my way back home
If you let me go home

There's a streetlamp on in the middle of the day

'Evil Carl' has existed before Peter came on the scene which leads me to believe...it's not about Pete.

Dirty Pretty Things – Deadwood Lyrics 19 years ago
cobain_grrrl have you written that about every song? Also I don't see how Peter's a coward.

Proof it isn't about him:-

"Carl: That's about getting dead wood out of your life. It could be Pete, I suppose, although it's not. My songs are more autobiographical. I'm not stupid enough to write a bitching album because it's just going to perpetuate the Libertines snare, which I don't want around my feet let alone around Anthony and Didz's feet who have nothing to do with it. If I was to do that, it'd be in a more sensational way than a few smug digs on the album."

Give the guy some credit will ya?

It's much much better live, so fast they almost can't keep up which is great to watch. Second single for those who don't know, buy it just for the NEW B-sides.

Dirty Pretty Things – Bang Bang You're Dead Lyrics 19 years ago
If someone wrote a song about me called 'Bang Bang You're Dead' I wouldn't be too happy. I doubt Carl was that impressed with 'Gang of Gin' either.

'Evil Carl' is a 'depressive f*ck' who's been floating around for a while. He's not Pete - I quote..

"The music press has suggested that the song Bang Bang You're Dead is dedicated to Doherty. Barat laughs, and asks why he would do that if he's just spent two years refusing to bitch about Doherty. If he'd wanted to do that, he would have called the song Bang Bang Pete's Dead."

People seem to be desperate for a good bitch, makes things more interesting I suppose. Oh well 'what does this song mean to you?'... etc.

Muse – Supermassive Black Hole Lyrics 19 years ago
Anyone who enjoys James Blunts 'music' isn't allowed to have an opinion on the wonderous Muse. Yes that's you Unidentified_Object, named and shamed. As for saying it's 'exactly like Britney Spears', that's just horrifyingly wrong.

The song itself is quite brilliant, also didn't like when I first heard but has grown on me a lot. I don't think I can better stormyserenitys interpretation so I won't try! Spot on for me anyway.

Dirty Pretty Things – Gin And Milk Lyrics 19 years ago
'You won’t really see me
I live in old movies
Cloaked tightly in sin
So they wont come in'

Love that bit. The acoustic one is great, Carls voice sounds brilliant.

Meaning? According to Carl it's about 'isolation and disillusionment with the world'. Make of that what you will.

Dis iz lik totaly bout Peter Doughtery! (well someone had to do it)

About 'Evil Carl' again. With Didz singing it makes me think it's about him and Carl overcoming 'Evil Carl' together which is sweet:-

'Isn’t it time you washed your face
It looks like a burnt out fireplace'

Sounds like Didz being a friendly nag to Carl

'And I am awash with memories
And worrying complexities'

Sounds very much like Carl, such a worrywart, thinking about the past

Also how Didz' 'gentle heart' got Carl through the 'endless dark' (depression) after The Split.

I love the line 'not too humble to embrace'. Sums up the band quite well, very touchy-feely.

It's pretty obvious to me you're very stupid. If Carl himself said it's about 'Evil Carl' then it must be, he did write the flippin song.

I agree with Jen-. There's references to prostitution as well

"There’s no card above receivers
Still its all so remote
Behind the bench at the rec
Where she lost fifty notes"

Love this, great to hear it recorded finally.

^Who's Pete Dougherty? I know of a Pete Doherty. I'm assuming you meant to post that to a different song because Bang Bang isn't actually just about him.

Dirty Pretty Things – B.U.R.M.A Lyrics 19 years ago
Nope, it's clap unless Carl got it wrong.

You must be pretty thick to think it's about Peter. It's about a guy in a war missing his girlfriend. B.U.R.M.A stands for Be Upstairs Ready My Angel, a WWII postal acronym.

The Zutons – Why Won't You Give Me Your Love? Lyrics 19 years ago
The video for this is ace! I'm guessing it's about a stalker/someone obsessed?

"When I see you out in town, I'm gonna hid so you can't see"

and the girl's getting a bit freaked:

"Well I don't like the way you've been hanging around and I sure don't like your hair"

It was obvious some people were gonna ruin DPT songs by stamping 'THIS IS ABOUT PETE' all over them. Music doesn't have to be about a person but feelings too. When I first heard it a while back I too thought 'Pete' straightaway before realising that was very unfair on Carl. Could be about Pete but probably not. It may suprise some but Carl did have a life before Pete and The Libertines and has one after.
