i respect the fact that songmeanings.net is open to personal interpretations of songs, but it seems to me that if you are on this website you are obviously interested in the artists in which you are commenting on. that being said. sufjan is a christian, you can choose to be ignorant of that fact and not believe the countless interviews in which sufjan confesses his faith. not to mention a majority of his songs have some kind of reference to christianity. to completely ignore the fact that sufjan is christian just seems downright ridiculous. especially if your goal is to figure out the meaning of this song considering a number of the verses refer to biblical accounts. just a thought. o and this song is fun to sing/play on banjo. |

yeah i think ac731 is right on.... but i heard somewhere that Aaron was heavily influenced by the Devendra Banhart song Little Yellow Spider. You can really see the similarities between that song and the spider songs of mewithoutYou and also just Brother, Sister in general...but what do i know...you should all go listen or look @ the lyrics to Devendra Banhart - Little Yellow Spider. |

i agree with mr. congo... what blessed backwardness? Christ had the power to stop himself from being crucified, yet he didn't out of his unshakeable love for us. Most of what Christ taught and how he lived is so backwards compared to our natural tendencies as human beings...love your enemies, turn the other cheek, if a man asks you for your cloak give him also your tunic, pray for those who persecute you....there are more cant think atm. I think the first part of the song about the cat is an illustration of christians who think that keeping their sins concealed from other people is somehow also hiding them from G-d, like how the cat closes it's eyes thinking that will make it so nobody sees him...Jesus taught to confess our sins to each other and to bear one another's burdens. Hiding our sins is almost like saying we don't believe that G-d is all powerful, omnipresent or maybe it might even show that maybe we don't believe in G-d. my 1 cent. |

sounds like: the invisible being above the shadows in the mist, before my doubting eyes, the infinite appears this time. the unquestionable is questioned, but makes no reply! i think the word doubting fits better into the whole meaning of this song. i could be wrong. nice job on the lyrics wow this song is great what new mystery is this? |

wow thanks for posting these lyrics. this song is amazing. not entirely sure what its about. but i like this line...it gives me the image of someone being lukewarm in their faith. i can't believe no one has posted on this awesome supertones song...... this song is pretty straightfoward...no real hidden meanings, but WOW this song is just amazing......its basically about how sometimes we as christians have doubts because we want things to turn out a certain way, and even the greatest ammount of human wisdom can't see what God's ultimate plan is....we really should just put our trust in him, even if the outcome isn't what we wanted. God knows what we want. Sometimes we come to God asking for things or asking why our prayers aren't getting answered, but we forget that HE is God. i really like the line "I don't believe in what you'd call blind faith but faith that you can do all that You promised |
