Very cool song. I like how Plan B combines a very modern situation and accent with the chorus from an old song. (The chorus has lyrics from 'Young Girl' by Gary Puckett, released in 1968). The meaning is simple, the music is perfect and the combination of London street talk with such an old chorus combine to make this one of the best songs from Plan B's album IMO. :) |

I am commenting in particular on the video.. which is an excellent companion to this song. It shows the scene of trench warfare with 2 classes of people, the boy sent to deliver a message to the troops and subsequently dying, and the commander, sitting at a posh table ordering everyone about in the lower ranks. The singer watches the boy die, unnecesserily, and this provokes some anger in him to disobey his orders. It shows scenes of the high class commander eating luxury food and sending more young soldiers to deliver a message throught the battlefield. He salutes evey single one of them, as if they are doing some noble mission, when all they are doing is dying out of the laziness of the officer, their life making no huge contribution to the patriotic war. Kasabian continue to march towards the officers, through the raging battlefield and then finally the singer finds himself face to face with the commanders men. He realises he will be shot, and continues to sing '"stop...we're all wasting away".. whilst saluting the man who shoots him dead for disobeying his orders. The end quote in relation to the poem by Owen sums up the message of the song, that dying for your country isn't always so patriotic or amazing. |

| Bad Religion – I Want to Conquer the World Lyrics | 19 years ago |

To me this sounds like Greg was desperate to say this within a song, and i think he did it perfectly. The lyrics describe the ideals of what he would like to achieve, what he would view as a perfect world where everyone understood each other and conflict and exploitation was eradicated. "We'll have peace on earth.." shows this. But Greg is aware that this ideal is impossible, and he shows this with the lines "with a quick wink of the eye...", demonstrating the corruption within alot of politics today. The picture that this song paints is idealic but the song has an underlying tone of frustration/desperation with the knowledge that it is unlikely this utopia will occur. |

The album "Crash of '47" is one of very few new albums (2004) that I can listen to all the way through and love every song. This song stands out for me, as quite a sad song about someone who's friends drowned. This is the most easy meaning to the song, however it could mean something else. Certianly this verse suggests this: "The water turned to black as the night rolled on in. I couldn't hear a sound as I slowly turned around. There I saw my friends all god damn face down. " All his friends drowned, however i don't know if they did it on purpose.. |
