Josh Pyke – Middle of the Hill Lyrics 16 years ago
It's not his mother with a fever, nor is it a reflection of mental illness...

"She had cool, cool hands when the fever hit
And then the noises that the trains made sounded like people in my head
And the stories that the ceiling told
Through the pictures and the grains in the pine-wood boards"

He's remembering his mum's hands taking his temperature when he had a fever, they always feel so nice and cool, and the trains might well sound like voices when your fevery, and staring at the ceiling making pictures and stories up because mum won't let you out of bed...
And yeah, pretty sure its cool, cool hands not cold cold hands.

The rest of the song is just a lovely picture of a rambling aussie childhood, love it.

The Frames – Finally Lyrics 18 years ago
Heard this played at the end of Life - episode 11 "Dig a hole, fill it up" (part2). It was a fantastic ep (it also featured Down Boy by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs which made me Squeee!), and a fantastic show and it's now introduced me to a song I'm really enjoying... the song fit very well I thought, and at first I thought I might like it only in the context of the ep, but.... no its just a really good song. It's very heartfelt and powerful; I'm liking it very much right now :D

Suede – Positivity Lyrics 18 years ago
I'd never quite thought of it that way; i'm doomed to optimism :P But thats a good point too... all the people who think the world spins for them :P

Myself though i always thought it was more of a love song. Describing someone who was, adimttedly, very confident in themselves ("you play where you want to play... where the creeps all prey" sounds like someone who wanders around kind of oblivious to what really happens in some places because theyre a bit to naive, a bit too positive, and wearing rose-tinted glasses, so to speak) but ultimately despite the flaws - which we al have - he's utterly smitten with this person. Especially in the first and last verses that comes through i guess.

Muse – Map of the Problematique Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought it said

"I can't get it right
get it right
Cause I'm not you"

but that might just be me listening to it on my ipod on a crowded bus all the time. Great song, great album

AFI – 6 to 8 Lyrics 19 years ago
wow. I saw them last night (fucking fantastic at the Hordern pavillion, sydney). And before playing this song davey said "correct me if i'm wrong, but i think this is the first time we've played this song live".

Which just blew me away.

And then as soon as i heard the opening guitar i had another heart attack ;) Always loved this song.

Just funny, them never having played it during a tour, when it appearing to be about touring.

Ben Lee – Gamble Everything for Love Lyrics 19 years ago
i dont think they're empty at all, i think they're expressive and... like youre deepest desire, to throw it all away for the one thing thats really important, even if it is idealistic and a bit irrational... i think it's a really, really beautiful sentiment. I hope to feel this way, one day, to have the guts and the pure feelings to do that.

Oh dear. Im glad i finally looked up these lyrics. Listening, i was way off... I always thought "rehersing interaction" was "nursing an errection"...

Interpol – The New Lyrics 19 years ago
Ahhh. My fave Interpol song :D

And onto my analysis (which are my off-the-wall opinions only :p). I think it's about a relationship; it's not half as perfect as the narrator (the guy, i'll probably refer to him as, because that's my perception, but you know...) thinks it could/should be... the other person (the girl, or whatever) is always holding back, not quite pushing him away but holding back. Depending on my mood while i listen, sometimes it has a happy ending and sometimes a sad; i'll explain both.

"I wish I could live free
I hope it's not beyond me
settling down it takes time"
--he hopes that in time she'll change and they can settle down together. He wonders if its his fault that she's holding back - "i hope its not beyond me" - and wishes he could live free, of doubts, perhaps?

"one day we'll live together
and life will be better
I have it here yeah in my mind"
--He's daydreaming & imagining what their lives could be like together.

"baby, you know someday you'll slow"
--I think she's living life in the fast lane, she's not ready to settle down and he is, but he's willing to wait.

"and baby, my heart's been breaking"
--As time goes on, the more she holds back the more it hurts him

"I gave a lot to you
I take a lot from you too
you slave a lot from me "
--He's put his all into making this work, he knows he's trying to make her change.

"guess you could say
i gave you my edge"
--I think he's saying that he changed to be the kind of person he thought girls wanted, someone not afraid of commitment who wants to settle down, he 'gave her his edge' only to find she's not that sort of girl anyway.

"I can't pretend
I need to defend
some part of me from you"
--This bit has me taking it a couple of different ways so bear with me. lyrically, you can see it as either "I cant pretend any more... because i feel like i need to defend part of me from you, so this whole thing is a lie" OR "I can't pretend i need to defend part of me from you... because i dont anymore so i should stop pretending i do". So coupled with the subtle change in the sound of the song i think this has flipped to the girls perspective, and is either an explanation of why she's holding back, or her saying she wont hold back any longer (hence my 2 endings lol. It could even be deliberate; the songwriter exploring the two ways it could go)

"I know I've spent some time a-lying"
--Depending on the above, its her saying, this whole thing is a lie, or ive been lying/pretending about holding back, but i wont anymore.

...damn this is a good song

The Vines – Spaceship Lyrics 19 years ago
Hmmm, I basically agree with you... But you seem to be thinking of it as being wirtten in the past tense, if you know what i mean. I think of someone knowing their family wants them gone... "the spaceship in the yard" symbolises his way out...

Arcade Fire – Cold Wind Lyrics 19 years ago
This is just me, and i tend to make totally off-the-wall assumptions, but... I always think of someone leaving someone. Just getting up and slipping away one night, without an explanation or a warning. I think of someone driving away.

"It's the middle of summer/im not sleeping" - They're on the road, its nighttime and they should be sleeping but they're driving away.

"In the middle of the night/they try to find me/but im still driving" - the person youve left reaches over in bed and realises youre not there... Very emotive.

"If you’re going to San Francisco/Lay some flowers on the grave stone" This reminds me of "Crown of Love", when it is sung something along the lines of "Theres flowers growing/on the grave of our old love". I think its like, 'I know you'll mourn the loss of our love, and so will I... so let this be a silent tribute to what we lost'.

"There’s music on the station/And I’m just listening to cold wind whistling" There's music on the car radio but he doesn't really hear it. He's just listening to the cold wind blowing past the car... moving further and further away from what hes left.

"Hey hey hey, something aint right..." This bit always originally put me in mind of turning around and wondering why the hell you left anyway. Probably how the song changes and becomes more upbeat, as Arcade Fire songs are wont to do (Another parallel to Crown of Love). But now i more think of a new start, a new life, when you've dealt with the memories of the old and moved on... but something inside you says 'i didn't do the right thing, i should've said goodbye...'

Ah, I love this song. I think i've heard from somewhere that it's not the most liked of Suede songs... I think it's just such a lovely song that it's impossible to pass up. Y'know - its the kind of song that makes me smile. I dunno, it's just *nice*.
