This song is definitely great, lyrically and musically. Gibbard's voice sounds much more subdued in this song than in most of the others on the album. Although it's open for debate whether this song is specifically talking about loving some person or the greater picture of just generally being able to care, the lyrics apply to both. Also, this song is the perfect transition from The Photo Album to Transatlanticism. As a whole, the songs on The Photo Album capture an upbeat attitude, whereas the ones on Transatlanticism seem to be more like something written while sadly reminiscing about romantic adventure (Title and Registration, We Looked Like Giants, Tiny Vessels, etc.). |

Yeah, I saw this song live twice in a month, once in Portland and another in Seattle, and it was the last song they played at both shows. The "screaming as if you were being eaten by a whale" was a nice touch. The woman's vocals are nice as well. |

This song has great imagery. Not many lyricists can make buying a hot dog sound romantic. The part about riding on a motorbike reminds me of Death Cab's song "brothers on a hotel bed" from the Plans album. it goes something like: "On the back of a motorbike, with your arms outstreched, trying to take flight, leaving everything behind. But even at our swiftest speed, we couldn't break from the concrete" Not just because of the word Motorbike, but because of the whole idea of trying to escape. |
