One of the greatest songs for several reasons. First, it broke all the rules. The folk singer went electric. It wasn't a "nice" song. It went more than five minutes when three minuteswould get you banned from AM radio. He pretty much created the need for FM. I think it's more about having values and holding onto them. The narrator is still grounded even though he has made it big himself. The chrome horse is her being on her high horse and being attracted to all that glitters. The diplomat with the Siamese Cat is a European type poser who has to etablish an image...Sounds like Warhol. Napolean in rags...may be Dylan himself. The man who would conquer the world but at the time was still poor. She wants him now and he says sorry, too late! So many great stories about this song...like how Al Kooper sneaked onto the organ because Mike Bloomfield was already playing guitar...the producer didn't want him there but Dylan liked the sound and kept him. The organ makes the record. Can't imagine it without that big beginning. How can you not love everything about it? |

This is such a great love song...One of the few that is about a relationship that is over and the guy knows it. He will never get his true love back and can only lament to her mother who lends a sympathetic ear. Very sad, and a classic. And please stop posting to say you like a song...this is about song meanings! Offer your thoughts. |

I read this song is a slam about a music critic for Rolling Stone who apparently knew little about pop music when he interviewd Dylan. He had a lot of difficulty with the media, and it is easy to see why when looking at some of his early interviews. Really dumb questions! Great sound to this song with the descending bass note on an Am chord. Very eerie sound. |

I think it'sretty obvious...The woman is coming to his window because it's not a relationship he wants made public. He is just using her. She wants someone to be there all the time and he just wants her to come over occasionally and spend the night. He also says at one point he is not alone. When he tells her to leave at her own chosen speed, he is saying "don't let the door hit you..." |
