| The Whitlams – Breathing You In Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| It strikes me as a lover, recalling the best times he ever had with his girl. It wasn't the hours of fun and movies, wasn't the dates and the things they had in common, it was times like this: knowing that she was always going to be there, having her sleeping on his shoulder. It was these small things that mattered most to him. | |
| Thirsty Merc – I Wish Somebody Would Build a Bridge (So I Can Get Over Myself) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
The culture references in this song are astounding, I'm surprised no one else has commented. To me, this speaks of a man caught up in the commercialism of this material world. As he tries t deal with it, he wonders if there really is a problem, or if he's just full of himself. One of the things that really jumped out at me was "It's all good I got a broom and a cheap persian rug now" Persian Rug is street slang for drugs (at least, it was about 10 years ago). I just thought the line was interesting. Also, it's Har-Hoo out of Jackshit, not Ho-Har. |

| Placebo – You Don't Care About Us Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Wow, "Us" as in "Our Relationship". That never occurred to me before. I always listened to this song and got an image of a friend who had left his group. Maybe he'd been fighting with them, lying or ignoring them, generally running away when everything got hard. The friends are mad at him because of it and are saying "Stop running away from us! You don't care about us!" Oh well, i suppose both interpretations work. |

| The Whitlams – Kate Kelly Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Wow, no one has commented this song yet. Well, most obvious, it's about Kate, Ned Kelly's sister who was raped, sparking off his reign of terror. You don't need a history lesson. It's speculating about a possible relationship between Kate and Joe, trying to understand how she would have felt knowing everything that had happened to her brothers and lover. I think he's trying to comfort her spirit or something like that. |

| The Dresden Dolls – Sex Changes Lyrics | 19 years ago |

The arrogance of some of the people here is astonishing. The amout of posts I've seen which start with the word "obviously" is just too many to be pure coincidence. Look, it's an analysis site. If the meaning was "obvious" we wouldn't be discussing it, and there wouldn't be so many varying opinions. This song speaks, i think, on many levels. It could have multipul meanings, depending on the listener, and thus is relatable to a wider audience. Actually, my favourite so far is the Macbeth connection. That doesn't necessarily mean it was the way the song was intended, but it did make me think. |

| The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Rose Tint My World Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think "Rose tint my world" refers to looking at the world through "rose tinted glasses". Basically, everythings ok because I'm not thinking of anything bad. | |

Yeah, abortions. The Yes, Virginia version is slightly different again. "I've been feeling dull as a coat hanger pretty as a picture of a patient on a fresh iv giddy as a gangbanger with a set of sutures where his magic johnson ought to be yes i'll tell you just the thing you need to be the next big thing let's start in with a test of your intelligence and zest for the counter-productive up and down and roundabout and out the back and keep your mouth shut tight the lights are staying out but no sweat I've got aim like a mack truck guess how many fingers ok guess how many more i can fit there guess right get the toaster but you know, miss, guessing gets you nowhere i've been baking cakes for the enemy i've been dying to find out the hard way ive been taking friends to the alleyway two down now but who's counting anyway? yes I can do everything you need from out of my new SUV all my work is guaranteed to last the length of your recovery put away those pliers honey trust me cause I know the options how about a nine-month long vacation and a two-foot coffin i've been getting up close and intimate some close calls but I'm getting into it in some states they say you can burn for it but ill burn that bridge when i get to it it's not a bad thing to get professional it's got a nice ring mandy goes to med school i've been taking tips from the government i've been getting damn good at hiding it fifty bucks a month ought to cover it two down now but who's gonna notice it? and if you show up and I am unavailable my partner brian would love to take care of you he is a nice man thoroughly reliable he's in a rock band and he goes to med school..... " That's also the version on their website. BTW, have the lyrics been changed recently? I swear it was the live version up before...the live plier verion cause that's all I had head til I bought the YV album... |

| The Dresden Dolls – Mrs. O. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
The first thing I thought of when I heard this was war, maybe someone who was a Jew in Germany or something talking to little children. I do have some questions though. Who IS Virginia O'Hanlon? And what is the story of O? I'm just wondering, I don't understand the context. But, yeah, this one just screamed Hitler and Jew to me. Though I"m not fond of the Yes, Virginia version either. |

The more I tihnk about nimzay's idea the more it grows on me; a highschool reunion. She's gone back and everything's changed because she's famous. "She's the kind of girl..." ~ This is what they thought and said about her while she was in school. "To all the ones who tried the most..." ~ The classic "big achievers" "Lift your hats Off to the checkout girls with tattooed backs..." ~ Those who are STILL working in a checkout after all those years. "To all the ones that hated me the most..." ~ They hated her in school, and still do, but they're trying to be civil, even friendly. But she isn't fooled, she knows they hate her. "To all the ones who thought they knew me best a test to prove your prowess..." ~People who are saying "we were best friends" but in reality they didn't get along in school. Poster Girl could refer to her being placed on a pedistool because she is famous. The rest perhaps describing the events of the reunion. Anyway, that's what I thought, after reading nimzay's post of course. |

What you all seem to be forgetting is the "Death Of The Author" idea. It states that, after something has been released, the author has no part in how people interpret it. Basically, if Amanda wrote a song because she bites her nails, that doesn't mean it can only be interpreted as someone biting their nails. No interpretations are wrong, that's why they are interpretations. Also, she said it was INSPIRED by her bad habit. That doesn't mean it is ABOUT her bad habit. I have a story written that was inspired by my younger brother, but it's not about him. This song is for interpretation and discussion, don't just dismiss people because they don't agree with what you've said, or even with what you've read on the website. Death of the author, remember that! Ok, now that my rant is over, thanks to OnePerfectDay for the vaseline tip. It was really confusing me. But honestly, to call people fuck heads for not interpreting the song the same way as the artist is just ridiculous. Look, I've read the site, I get that's what made her write it, but we ALL interpret everything differently! That's why we're different!Just cause she wrote it doesn't make her interpretation more right than someone elses. That's not the way interpretation works! |

| This is such a tender and sad song. I wonder if she writes this from personal experience. So touching! | |
| Bloodhound Gang – Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
It's so damned obvious. When I first heard it it took me a while, because I knew it was the army alphabet (same in all english speaking countries!), but it didn't hit me what it was spelling. Then I went. Foxtrot. F. Uniform. U. Charlie. C. Kilo. K. and like BAM! got it. Thing is, he says "I don't wanna beat around the bush, but that's all he does. He just wrote a song filled with innuendo and euphamisms! Sweet arse song at that! Plus you can play it on the radio at work without getting in trouble ;) |

| The Dresden Dolls – Truce Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| According to the DD sit, the bit at the end "Amanda, you're telling me fairy tales" is a recording of her grandmother just before she died. Maybe that has some significance I have yet to realise... | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics | 20 years ago |

Hmm, rape. Interesting annalisys. As for myself, I haven't actually decided what this song means to me. Although I'd like to bring up another idea for discussion. I've heard thoughts that it is about a hermaphrodite (sp?) or someone hating their father. Maybe it's a combination of both. A child was born a hermaphrodite, mostly girl. Her paretns did all they could but it made it worse, hence "Half corrective surgery gone wrong". Maybe, her father was so ashamed that he did a runner. Now she's blaming herself for her father leaving and, at the same time, blaming the fact that she is neither male, nor female, on him. She blames him for makingher worse and is seeking atonement. I hope I've given you all something to think about. |

One other thing I'd like to add. "i'm tried bandages and sinking i've tried gloves and even thinking i've tried vaseline" most of this makes sense but I don't quite get the Vaseline part. What does vaseline actually do to stop you hurting yourself? |

I think this has a deeper meaning than cuttig or even self injury. I think it reflects the way each of us copes with our problems, causing harm to ourselves (although not always physical). Then it becomes more personal, reflecting her own problems. The line "Even if I quit there's not a chance in hell I'd stop" seems to show that. The section "and anyone can see the signs mittens in the summertime thank you for your pity, you are too kind" I think explains how, when people realise what you're oing to yourself, they either completely disregard it (because they don't want to believe it maybe?) or give you false simpathy, a way to make themselves feel better. "and sappy songs about sex and cheating bland accounts of two lovers meeting make me want to give mankind a beating" - This part kinda makes me think about mediocre society and how everything has become so conformist. This is all you see on TV and all you hear on the radio, she's basically telling the world to give it a rest. This part always reminds me of Paris Hilton in Simple Life, as well as soap operas. Seeing that people will sink this low makes me want to punch them. I really can relate to this song, it's one of there best. My favourite part is "and as the skin rips off i cherish the revolting thought that even if i quit there's not a chance in hell i'd stop and anyone can see the signs mittens in the summertime thank you for your pity, you are too kind". I esspecially like the way she shouts th last few words. It really gives it meaning. |
