| Dan Auerbach – Whispered Words (Pretty Lies) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This is my favourite from the album so far. Charles Auerbach (Dan's father) wrote the lyrics, and Dan 'fleshed' it out with music I love the drumming and pauses in it too! |

| yogiwogi - you nailed it! Spot on. | |
| Kings of Leon – Cold Desert Lyrics | 17 years ago |

For me the "hand over your heart" line is to be interpreted with the previous. She vows that she'll love him until they die. He responds by saying 'hand over heart, let's go home'. Meaning "promise, now let's live our lives." You place your hand over your heart to make a promise (remember as a kid 'cross your heart, hope to die') Great lyric. |

| The Black Keys – Same Old Thing Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Love the woodwind on this as well. Can anyone hear a hint of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" in the solo of this? (Compare 1:51 of The Ocean to Same Old Thing from 2:13). |

| Cold War Kids – Every Valley Is Not a Lake Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I prefer the version on their EP 'Hang Me Out To Dry'. The production on the album version is too "clean" and "sterile". To hear the EP version just e-mail me (check profile). | |

I like Twoey2E interpretation of the song. Another interpretation is that it's about the irony of having someone when you really have nothing to offer. I think one line sums up this song: "For she loves you for all that you are not." He thinks he can impress her with silly things, but at the end of the day he's just a drunk. "She’s not gonna choose you for standing so tall, Go on and take a swig of that poison and like it" I see the hotel bit about having your life crash down around you. |

Hey thanks scarecrow. Still not sure on the first two though? For Beneath the Surface and Frontier City: http://www.demonoid.com/files/download/HTTP/1629607/5426554 |

| This is the B-side to "Sex on Fire". I did this by ear so if you think there's any mistakes let me know... | |
| Tom Waits – Top of the Hill Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I like eggytoast's explanation that he's dead. Seems to make sense... | |
| Kings of Leon – Notion Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| My first favourite from the album. For some reason it reminds me of Ragoo from BOTT. | |
| Powderfinger – Living Type Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I agree with daddio. And the final verse about 'the cross on your head' confirms enchanted_mud comment about Charles Manson. Apparently everytime his parole comes up he carves a swastika in his forehead. |

| Tom Waits – Hoist That Rag Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I agree with stogie. This song is basically a commentary on the US and its ideology. To try and add to his comments. The first verse introduces the violent history of America. 'I learned my trade from Piggy Knowles and Tommy Shay Boys'. As Zoltan above mentioned these are violent American characters, shaping early American cities and culture. The second verse is self-explanatory, America's military involvement in other countries. '...know what to do if the baby cries.' The baby is the American public/interests. When these are threatened, US policy and history suggests they 'Hoist that rag'. By rag he means the American flag. Insightful when one considers the fact that in the Iraq War US troops draped the US flag over Saddam's statue before the Iraqi flag. The third and fourth verse just refer to the loss of liberty (cracked bell - ie liberty bell), and lack of justice (ghost bird - ie American bald eagle is a ghost, a phantom) as American's 'stick their fingers in the ground and... turn the world around' ie become the world's 'dictators'. In essence its about America's tendency to hoist a rag (by rag Waits suggests the triviality and over zealous patriotism of Americans) when US interests are threatened. |

| Tom Waits – Trampled Rose Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Yeah nice vocal, covered recently well in a spooky vocal by Alison Krauss on the duet album (with Robert Plant) "Raising Sand". E-mail me (check profile) if you want a copy of Krauss' version. | |
| Tom Waits – Lost in the Harbour Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I love this song. tomwaitslibrary.com quotes Tom as saying it's about walls (And the wall won't come down), for example Berlin Wall, Israel/Palestine, Northern Ireland conflict. Hence the "over here" and "over there". My favourite line is "And the wall won't come down Till they're no longer afraid of themselves" and the last verse. |
|
| Tom Waits – Day After Tomorrow Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| He isn't making Rockford sound glamourous. He says he misses it, and you won't believe that what he is missing is so mundane - shovelling snow and raking leaves. It may seem like chores to most, but I suppose if you're a soldier in a war overseas, you realise that you never really miss or appreciate such things til they're gone. | |
| Tom Waits – Everything You Can Think Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Great example of his barking voice style. I love the haunting pirate 'arghs' at the end. | |
| Kings of Leon – My Third House Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Enigma – Return To Innocence Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Good song, samples the drum track from "When The Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin. | |
| Kings of Leon – My Third House Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This was the B side on the 'On Call' single. Thinking this could be about drink driving? | |
| Led Zeppelin – Swan Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Tom Waits – Town with No Cheer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| When I saw the title and lyrics of this song I thought of an old Australian drinking song. A google search revealed that it probably is a rewrite of this song, the Slim Dusty hit "Pub With No Beer", hence "Town With No Cheer". | |
| Foo Fighters – Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Actually Robert Plant was noted for consistently stuffing up the lyrics to Stairway and Kashmir, amongst others. So it's obviously a parody. | |
| Kings of Leon – Fans Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
There is an error with the lyrics. It is actually "All of London sing Because England swings and they sure love the tales I bring" Straight from the lyrics in the album liner. |
|
| Kings of Leon – Charmer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I agree with Q_ELLIOT, when i heard this I immediately thought of Pixies song 'Tame'. Though the screaming is nowhere near the same intensity. | |
| Led Zeppelin – Boogie with Stu Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Yes meanceprimeaux they did rip-off three or four songs that were pretty much blues staples! I'm talking about the people who always bring When The Levee Breaks, In My Time Of Dying, Dazed and Confused, Custard Pie, Trampled Underfoot etc etc where you wouldn't pick it but for the lyrics. | |
| Led Zeppelin – In the Light Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
WHOA! Check this out - an alternate studio version with a very creepy opening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj9G4TBPzqE |
|
| Led Zeppelin – C'mon Everybody (Eddie Cochran cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think it's one of the songs they sometimes played in the extended Whole Lotta Love melodies in concert. By the way JuFu, Led Zeppelin is not a he, they're actually a band with four people in it. | |
| Tom Waits – Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Tom Waits mixed a popular Australian song "Waltzing Matilda" with his own original material. The Australian original is about a travelling man (swagman) who stole a sheep (jumbuck) stuffed it in his bag but then was cornered by the farmer who owned the sheep (squatter) and the police (troopers). The swagman jumped into the billabong so he wouldn't get caught alive and his ghost is still there today. 'Waltzing matilda' means to travel with your swag (where you roll all your stuff up in a fabric or whatever and carry it). Waltz = to travel, matilda = swag. Good song, I like the war/fight/hopelessness type theme and sombreness of it. |
|
| Led Zeppelin – Boogie with Stu Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| they did not rip this song from ritchie valens, Plant just spontaneously sang the lyrics from Valens "ooh my head". They specifically put Mrs Valens on the credits SO SHE COULD get royalties as ritchie was dead. i'm sick of ppl saying led zeppelin ripped songs without knowing which and how. Compare some of their 'ripped' songs to the originals and they only way you would know they were similar is the lyrics. good song... | |
| Led Zeppelin – In the Light Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| to stephiphany he's actually singing 'sure 'nuff they do' (sure enough they do). so he's singing 'everyone needs the light, sure enough they do', which makes perfect sense. | |
