@[koselara:44466] It's the second to last scene in Casablanca. Rick: Last night we said a great many things. You said I was to do the thinking for both of us. Well, I've done a lot of it since then, and it all adds up to one thing: you're getting on that plane with Victor where you belong. Ilsa: But, Richard, no, I... I... Rick: Now, you've got to listen to me! You have any idea what you'd have to look forward to if you stayed here? Nine chances out of ten, we'd both wind up in a concentration camp. Isn't that true, Louie? Captain Renault: I'm afraid Major Strasser would insist. Ilsa: You're saying this only to make me go. Rick: I'm saying it because it's true. Inside of us, we both know you belong with Victor. You're part of his work, the thing that keeps him going. If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life. Ilsa: But what about us? Rick: We'll always have Paris. We didn't have, we, we lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night. Ilsa: When I said I would never leave you. Rick: And you never will. But I've got a job to do, too. Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that. Now, now... Here's looking at you kid. |

| Miranda Lambert – Bluebird Lyrics | 5 years ago |

Lambert's song is a reference to Bukowski poem of the same name. Both are likely referring to the "bluebird of happiness." This is a clever song. Turn 20 cents in to a ten means she's going to increase her money 50x (i.e., a $10 bill), but her plans didn't turn out and the 10 she got was a dime that she'll rub until she figured out what happened. I also like the way she rhymes "dark" and "heart" by making the "k" extra soft and the "t" silent. Oooo oooo oooo. |

@[luckye225:8479] Sweet. Thanks for sharing. I enjoy catching references by one artist to another. See Blink 182's "Adam's Song" ("I took my time, I hurried up The choice was mine, I didn't think enough") referring to to Nirvan's "Come as You Are" ("Take your time, hurry up, The choice is yours, don't be late"). |

| Sarah McLachlan – Plenty Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| "I would not let myself believe That you might stray," to me, says that she was cheated on. She wouldn't have believed if someone told her that he was unfaithful ("And I would stand by you No matter what they'd say"). But she knew when she looked into his eyes ("I looked into your eyes/They told me plenty/I already knew"). It was devastating because she had plans to be together forever (... until my dying day). | |
| Pet Shop Boys – Some Speculation Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| @[karmax:6142] That sounds right. My ex wife cheated with a married man, and the ex and the now divorced man married each other. They now have to spend their lives together without any doubt that the other would cheat. That's got to eat at them. | |
| Counting Crows – Another Horsedreamer's Blues Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| I was listening to this song again today, and heard the following line differently: "So she takes her pills/Careful and round/One of these days she's gonna throw the whole bottle down." I had always thought this meant she would swallow a whole bottle in a suicide, but this time I heard it as she'd throw the bottle away and be done with the pills. I just thought I'd point out the ambiguous interpretations, and that I think such lyrics are really clever. | |
| Joan Baez – The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Lyrics | 10 years ago |

@[JamesMatory:4424] Your comment is a little hysterical. And I’m not even sure who you are railing against. It appears you are having an argument against your own projections (“as some might say” . . . but nobody did say.). Further, you seem to be upset that the writers, singers, and commentators are not spending their time “testifying.” You’re going to have a miserable life and go to an early grave if you keep working your panties into a bunch, being “astonished,” “disgusted,” and “disappointed” over “missing” internet comments. You reveal your true mission when you cast your “shame” on the composers and singers of this song, and presumably on those who like to listen to it, because of your perceptions. To that I say: piss off. Stop trying to tell other people what they should not write, what they should be saying instead, and what songs they should be listening to.. And to counter your judgmental attempt at shaming Robbie Robertson, Joan Baez, The Band, and others, I say “thank you” to all these artists for bringing us this beautiful song. If you want to point out that you think this song is nostalgia for racism, fine. To me, in 2015, it is just Virgil Caine’s sad tale, set to beautiful music with clever and amazing imagery. I like it, and much to your dismay, I’m sure, I’ve listened to it many a time with nary a negative thought for anyone of any color, race, gender, or creed. Finally, if you really took time to analyze the song, Virgil comes to the conclusion that "You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat." I.e., the South (meaning the racist confederate South you are referring to) is never going to “rise again.” This is hardly an apologetic anthem; this is a realistic requiem. |

| Teena Marie – Lovergirl Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| The movie "Dirty Girl" brought me here. There is a fun road trip scene where the two main characters are singing this song with a choreographed chair dance. I forgot I forgot this song. But now it's on my iPod and every time I hear it I'll think of the movie scene. | |

| Indigo Girls – Soon Be to Nothing Lyrics | 13 years ago |

The singer is driving the same old route she always does (“I’ve passed these pines ‘bout a million times”), but this time she saw an accident (“a break apart”). She couldn’t be objective didn’t appreciate the theater of life (“no sympathy for the beggar’s art”). It really made the reality of her mortality foremost in her conscious and now she’s afraid of death (“fear is what I feel a the slow unraveling of me”). Someone tried to tell her that the dark thoughts would pass, but she knows that is wrong (“you tell me it’s temporary … don’t you think I know it’s in my mind”). She’s going to die but, just not when (“I’ll soon to be nothing but I don’t know when”). The middle part is pretty cryptic. It seems she’s comparing herself to a domesticated animal who is just following the trail, the only way she can go. She’s trying to out run her constant thoughts of death and pretends she’s happy (“well the way I flee … a barn happy horse on a one-track course”). But sometimes she sees the futility and she hates herself because what was supposedly the “happy trail” only brought events that she regretted doing. She’s not done with her journey, though. She has a long way to go, but she’s unhappy (“the song is gone”) and she’s dead inside (“I blow empty in my cicada shell”). So she thinks about how she can find her identity and retreats to the safety of the internal, but she’s still tied to her old way of thinking and doing. Every day is a battle (“It’s a daily grind”) to go on while she waits for what ever it is that will end her story (“’Till I hear that click that unlocks my fate.”) So she just keeps going forward (It’s right over left”), and the only consolation is the end will come soon enough (“I’ll soon to be nothing but I don’t know when”). |

| Gillian Welch – The Way It Goes Lyrics | 14 years ago |

This song is about how everyone starts of as a baby, innocent and vulnerable. Almost everyone has parents and relatives who want nothing but the best. “Everybody's buying little baby clothes.” But one way or another–“ That's the way that it goes”–these kiddos grow up to be dead druggie–“Becky Johnson bought the farm; Put a needle in her arm”–A prostitute–“ She was busted, broke and flat; Had to sell that pussy cat [double entendre]”–a killer and a cheating wife–“ Did he throw her down a well? Did she leave him for that swell [another man]?” Ironically, the people who seemed the happiest with the brightest future as a youngster are the ones who have a great downfall–“See the brightest ones of all; Early in October [in middle life] fall.” The ones who are evil and mean do well in this wicked world able to by expensive drink and sleep well–“While the dark ones go to bed; With good whiskey in their head.” But “That's the way that it ends.” This is not theoretical. All these stories are about people the author knew–“Though there was a time when you and I were friends.” I’m not sure what the author is saying about him or herself: When you lay me down to rest Leave a pistol in my vest Do you miss my gentle touch? Did I hurt you very much? I (s)he is saying me too: I had all the potential, and I ended up cold and unloving because I was so defensive. This is such a beautiful and insightful song. I get sad sometimes thinking about how the world beats you down, and all our hopes and dreams do not come to fruition. For many people the American Dream is the American Nightmare. |

| Neko Case – Polar Nettles Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
She says in one of her live performances, "the one about a dude in love with a phantom nurse . . . this unrequited love." Per Wikipedia a nettle is a plant that has many hollow stinging hairs called trichomes on its leaves and stems, which act like hypodermic needles that inject histamine and other chemicals that produce a stinging sensation when contacted by humans and other animals. The plant has been known to kill, including horses and at least one person. Her imagery is amazing. Quite the wordsmith. |

| Depeche Mode – Shake The Disease Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I respectfully disagree. Martin wrote "Some people have to be permanently together/Lovers devoted to each other forever." Then he goes on to contrast the way he feels about his affair. Why would he compare his relationship to other lovers if his relationship wasn't in the same category? It seems to me that this song is a plea to someone to truly *know* him. Words always fail to truly capture thoughts, and this is goes doubly for men (generally) who have a very hard time saying “I love you” or express their emotions. He genuinely wants to speak what is in his heart, but when he tries “a cat gets his tongue” and he is unable to articulate. Despite this “disease,” he’s “tried as hard as [he] could.” It’s so sad, because despite the fact that whomever he is talking to knows him better than anyone in the world (“Nobody knows me As well as you do”), he is still isn’t understood. If his love cannot know him, no one ever can. |

| Erasure – The Circus Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
>Call it new technology And they use it to burn And they show no concern Advancements in human technology are being implemented, but the effects are devastating people being affected and the environment, but those beholden to the shareholders care not. >Work for their prosperity while the big wheels turn now it's too late to learn The workers made the owners of the businesses rich and prosperous when management needed the laborers, but now they do not need anyone because they have the machines to do the work. The workers eked out a living when useful, but now that they are useless to those in power it is too late to realize the workers were never going to get ahead. > Don't upset the teacher though we know he lied to you, Don't upset the preacher Gonna close his eyes for you School, educators, universities, etc. tell you that if you work hard and study you can be gainfully employed. But education is no guarantee that you will be able to make your way in the world. The church tells you that working hard is the path to a better life, but what practical answers do religious institutions really have when you are desperate. It’s all useless when you and your family are homeless and hungry. > And it's a shame That you're so afraid Just a worker waiting In the pouring rain Putting back the pieces Of a broken dream Now that you have experienced ECONOMIC VIOLENCE, you will never be the same. The insecurity, the loss of identity that came with your job/profession, the feelings of impotence in the world, the inability to be with friends and family who are doing ok because you resent their success and cannot stand their pity, the unfairness of it all… > Father worked in industry, Now the work has moved on, And the factories gone > See them sell your history, Where once you were strong And you used to belong > There was once a future For a working man, There was once a lifetime For a skillful hand > Yesterday You watched your parents as an example of what was the way to be successful in the world, except the model that worked for them is no longer applicable. Your skill and knowledge are no guarantee of success like they were a generation ago. Your community, which gave you strength is tearing apart. You are now an outsider with “no meaning or control, and nowhere left to go” (common people, by Pulp). > Putting back the pieces, Of a broken dream > Tempers fray so easily In desperate despair, Is there anyone that cares A secondary effect of being under/un-employed is that causes stress in marriage. Serious depression sets in, and you feel all alone. > Just another tragedy, Just a personal affair In a room somewhere With no way out, you see suicide as the only option. All alone you take your life. |

| Lynn Anderson – Rose Garden Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| "But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover." If you want the beautiful majesty that is a rose, you must take the thorns that invariably follow. Analogously, if you wish the benefits of love that comes in a relationship, you must take the conflict will accompany. | |
