I feel that this song is Anthony's way of expressing two things: (1) that life will ALWAYS have "uncertainty", but it should not stop you from being able to live or make decisions, and (2) not to let the appearance of other people's lives distort the reality of your own life in this regard (I feel like he uses himself as an example). The first verse seems like his way of empathizing with this idea. In the 1st paragraph, he relates a person's internal doubts about their job/work--for him, his music and the perfectionist in him questioning if his lyrics are too metaphoric or misunderstood. In the 2nd paragraph he relates to the classic "cynic" in all of us...in his case, trivializing songwriting as simply "detailing every ounce of pain he's been through". He continues by referencing a person's natural fear of "overworking" and the possibility that our jobs will take an undesired and permanent toll on us--in his case, how opening himself up to write deep and emotional music might impact him, and his desire to maintain a connection to the normal, non-expressive everyday life (leaving a "trail" to keep himself grounded). And obviously, AG is a successful musician and songwriter and we would think him crazy to doubt his own music in that way, but that's exactly the point of the first 2 paragraphs. All people--you, me, rock stars, athletes, celebrities--have doubts about what they do in life on a daily basis. It's human nature. We should expect, be responsible for, and not be afraid of even our most confident decisions to carry a measure of uncertainty from day-to-day. The chorus is this exact idea, that the journey of our lives is not some "easy" thing and will not always be clear-cut (inaccurate/imprecise). There being "no gift without a price" means that no one can reap life's rewards for free. You can't live depressed and uncertain then expect to be rewarded without taking risks, and failing (being "wrong"), and learning from your mistakes. Even when your soul is "shaken and lost all direction." I think this song is speaks perfectly to Generation Y'ers like me who grew up in the late 80s and 90s with the unrealistic notion that life was a piece of cake, that we could do anything or be anyone, and that we should all strive to find our "purpose" in life. All very good thoughts, but not really helpful when expectations are totally crushed by reality. The lyrics of this song speak wonderfully to being content with, and embracing, life's constant uncertainties. |

| From First to Last – Ride The Wings Of Pestilence Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I think DryEraseSmile has it right. The song is about teenagers who change themselves repeatedly to fit in. It talks about "teen angst" as this disease that's spreading throughout today's youth. The song describes it as something that will sneak up on you, kill you violently... [Hiding behind the shadows, I'll be waiting in the dark, to drive this blade straight through your heart] ...and then assume your identity, where presumably people (i.e., the kids you hang around) like you better. [I'll hide you in my walls, Your body will never be found, I'll wear your skin as a suit, Pretend to be you, Your friends will like you more than they used to] And the metaphor is so true too. It eludes to how many normal-looking young kids seemingly fall victim overnight to "teen angst" over and over again... [Dear diary, My teen angst bullshit has a body count. I believe it's 6 going on 7 now, 7 now] ...totally normal one day, then reinventing themselves as some depressed teen, pretending like they have it hard just so they have an excuse to do stupid stff, like hurt themselves, do drugs, or in general act rebellious. Then the next thng you know, their "new identity" (e.g., reinvented screamo scenester) wastes no time in revelling in the "murder" of their old self. [I'll be dreaming about you, In a pool of your own blood. With your eyes gouged out, By the work of my thumbs. The scent of your insides, From under the floor boards. Is the perfect perfume for settling the score.] And again, especially in their eyes where they go from show to show and see all the same scene kids, the "teen angst" phenomemon probably looks like a plague [pestilence] that spreads through today's youth, and how kids "ride" it, as if were some fun thing and not at all realizing that it's destructive nature. |

| Closure In Moscow – We Want Guarantees, Not Hunger Pains Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I'm gonna go cliche and take the "war"-meaning approach. I think the song can be used to describe how people other countries react to the us in the States asking them to join in the war. The 1st part mentions "indifference," which I think is how many Americans view the war...a lot of people don't like the idea of war but are out of touch and have absolutely no plans to do anything about it. So there's the initial to support us on the grounds that if they're going to die for U.S.'s cause they at least want some compensation--recognition ("tomb with trinkets") or at least for the U.S. to pay that country back later on down the road ("guarantees") and not just get forgotten like we've done historically with other countries ("hunger pains"). The "awkward dialogue" between the "ghost and those denied" I think would be that foreign countryman dying in the War and having to face those who have already died whose family members have opposed the war. The chorus would refer to the Americans who just going along with whatever is happening with the war and not taking any kind of position on it. Meaning those people who are stuck between feeling guilty ("penance") about it and just waiting to see what happens ("patience"), when in the end just being led by those in power to do whatever they want ("lost our way"). "You told me what you stand for/The sleepless crusade/The bitter campaign" is kind of a back-handed way of recognizing those people who only *act* patriotic by talking people's heads off about what "America stands for" but doing little more. The part that says "You'd be unwise the sate the urge/but go ahead you wouldn't be the first" to me is the response of Americans who defend their cause and warn other countries not to back out of supporting the U.S. no matter how tempting. And if they do, then hey they're not the first ones...sort of a challenge to keep in it. |

| Fall Out Boy – Fame < Infamy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The Song title is: FAME < INFAMY someone earlier said that it reads: "Fame is less than infamy," going on with an explanation about britney spears or something. Interesting, but WRONG, I think. Going with "savourflavour"s song meaning (above), it doesn't apply at all. Instead I believe the title is supposed to read: "FAMELESS, THEN INFAMY" (think about it they're clever kids to do this) The title says it all. That love it hate it nature of the music business and being afraid or just sick of what all bands are of when success hits--going straight from FAMELESS (regional following, filler band, music on tons of samplers) to being INFAMOUS (wrongly seen sellouts, loss of core fan base, identity, bullsh like that) |

YES. I've heard it a trillion times and I feel its about Rape also. But maybe with a twist? Like a couple who have been together for a looong time and are in love. when suddenly the girl suggests committment, and and the guy loses it b/c all he wants is sex. so he gets out of hand and rapes the girl to get what he wants. Meier (maybe a fictitious name to use) may we be this way forever? (girl suggesting marriage, or exclusivity) And tell me lover what will become of the others? (girl questioning his past relationships or the "other" girls in the world that aren't her) Bones, skin, nails, and flesh… (the guy taking advantage of the girl's clinginess, and the nakedness of it all. are those even words? i dunno...) On a bed of lack of passion (a bed with a man and woman in it, but no passion between them...rape!), A medieval consequence (the consequence of leading a man on in medieval times. hint: a crime that went unpunished many centuries ago...) They worry you with all the talk about your not their kind (the girl saying that the guys friends bug him about not being single, or perhaps 'whipped' in a relationship while they screw around with other girls) Now I am stealing her body and taking it home. (stealing her innocence for himself) There is always one more fall. (perhaps the guy's justification for doing it, like "what are you gonna do, break up with me? you love me") Maladjusted, you must trust me darling, (for psychologists maladjusted means emotionally unstable and cant cope with personal relationships, and the "trust" may be the guy's desire for the girl to like it) This will hurt you, it’s killing me... (rape hurts, but the guy may think he feels worse if he starts to feel guilty) Bloodlust, for this girl (the ravenous nature he is exerting toward the girl) Bloodloss, for this boy (this may be graphic to suggest, but if she bleeds while its happening?? ehh...a longshot...) But now I punch a wound and once again forgive my sin. (again with the guilt factor. the wound may be a self-inflicted cut or something else an emotionally unstable person does to themself. asking forgiveness from God) This is forever (that kind of emotionally scarring lasts a person's life. no doubt about it) |

| Finch – Bury Me (Updated) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think the words go on the middle part... "Take these eyes and bury me. Somewhere that I can't see. (if she wants to forget about him, to do it in a way he'll never know about, hence taking his 'eyes' first) You'll face it when you die. I can't cry." (like saying, you wont realize your mistake until the day u die, but by that time it'll be too late for me to care, or "cry") and then a few lines later, I think he says "Stake" your claim into my veins" instead of "state" (since 'staking a claim' means to settle down somewhere, or make some place your own, whereas 'stating a claim' means to make a case for, which it could be in a different sense. but i dont think so) |

| Finch – A Man Alone Lyrics | 20 years ago |

My take is similar to the previous person saying "Nate is trying to say that he feels as if he no longer has his own identity or his own soul. he wants to fall away from society and to disappear from the public eye"... I woke up this morning with out a face. (he woke up without a reassuring identity, possibly about his music) I've fooled myself again, (he thought by waking up anew, he would be different. but he was wrong.) I've sold myself again. (did lots of things to try and change, didnt happen.) Another wasted day counting shades of gray, (counting shades of gray=another way of saying he went through lots to find the right fit) Another fool's attempt to fall from grace. (self-explanatory). A casual line. (line could be verbal, like a casual remark someone can make to brush off criticism. or...dare i say...a line of coke?) A sip of wine to sympathize, While you're laughing. But on the inside, I've lost the insight that just might be the truth... (like the person above said) Old man loneliness is a son of a bitch (loneliness can be like a Both hands bound, can't scratch the itch... (like a problem that keeps bothering, you keep trying to fix it but can never exactly get to it) Cut off all loose ties, then bleed for days, (the people he's surrounded by take their time to help him while he struggles, before 'cutting him loose'. Then when he needs them the most, they leave again and let him deal with a new problem, or 'scratching the itch too hard so that he bleeds the death'.) Who could stand veins with friends like these? (who can stand to have something they love, music perhaps, with friends who are so in and out like that regarding their support) *i think these next lines are regarding the new album* I pick my teeth out of the mud, (after getting knocked down by retarded press and critics, he's getting his things back together again) And sink the sun, what have you done? (people think 'what have you done' like why did u throw away what gave you life in the first place, perhaps that driving poppy sceamo that finch used to thrive on) I cut the bandages, Remove the oxygen, (after 'surgery', or finch's reinvention they revealed themselves...) Hey man what's with that stupid grin?(some might think, 'whats with the new style' or "grin" since some people come out of surgery with strange new faces. joker/batman similarity...?) The rest I haven't really thought out yet. |
