I feel that this song is about American politics. First of all, the title of the song, Avarice, refers to greed, particularly for wealth. Avarice is listed by the Catholics as one of the Seven Deadly Sins. This is perfectly applicable to the present day situation in American politics. We have started a war with no reason other than to gain resources and money. Our leaders are willing to kill innocent people in order to get what they want. I feel that this song is a biting political commentary. |

I think that this song is sbout someone who recognizes that they are unique and is willing to fight to to hold on to that uniqueness. They are saying that they are going to be the way they are no matter what anyone else says about it. This song epmhasizes the importance for visionaries in our society. People with new ideas are often shunned or even hated. I think that this song is written from the point of view of one of those visionaries. |

thanks to michael for clearing up the question of the lyrics. I tought thought that he was originally saying "i only wanted them blessing me" which didn't make any sense when taken in context with the rest of the song. also, i think that this song isn't necessarily specific to bush, but that it discourages the elevation of any person of power to a godlike status. I definately feel that it smacks of a protests song, tho. And an excellent one at that |

This song does an amazing job of conveying the purpose that was in mind when it was written. As soon as i heard, i instantly thought of the many friends that i have that are in desctructive, combative relationships where all they do is argue for the sake of arguing. I also feel that this song could be applied to all of the people who bitch about the state of the country/world but are unwilling to actually do anything about it. |

I agree with everything that everyone has stated so far. Also, I feel that this song is one of the most powerful political commentary songs that i've ver heard, mostly because of david's excellent vocals. you can feel his sense of anger/frustration and you can definately tell that he wants to do something about the current state of the world. Over all, this is also one of the best covers ever. It stays true to the original yet surpasses it in so many ways. |

I can see where demise of me is coming from with that view on these lyrics. personally, however, i feel that this song is a bit more a of a political commentary. I think that it is written from the point of view of a soldier from a useless war and he has been so blinded by "patriotism" that he doesn't understand why he is in hell for killing. Just my thoughts on the song, which I also feel is one of the best on the album. |
