Reminds me of Germany and the Pogues and Dubliners playing. Promoter asked each of them what and how much drink they wanted. "one guiness", "two stout" etc. Then he came back whith the drink only to have the boys explain that one or two ment one or two crates not one or two drinks. |

When you see the ould couples in the ould pubs in the Irish ghettos who spend the night getting drunker and and giving each other hell yet going home together at the end of the night cos all they have is each other then you know you're where this was written. |

He's also saying that he doesn't need anyone else's hell, he'll find his own thank you very much. There's a great sense of place and time here also with the mix of the old man not able to let go of the past and the young guy not able to cope with the present. Unless you've spent a lot of time in pubs and know that Irish thirst then it's hard to get inside the picture that Shane can paint. |

Layena is about the 'poor little rich girl' type that hung about the scene in London and Donovan is gently mocking the type of hanger-on that can afford to be there to be cool or in but isn't realy getting what is going on. Well said prog rocker7 and if you want to talk Donovan then mail me, I did interview him several times. |

| Donovan – To Sing For You Lyrics

When Donovan met Dylan, Donovan had just written this song and played it to Dylan, who in turn had just written 'Baby Blue' and played it to Donovan. Many saw this as some sort of 'victory' for Dylan but they are totaly different people and songwriters and this is a great example of that difference. |

This one is always funny as so many even at the time thought is was about bananas they even stopped selling them in places in America. It's actually about vibrators and Safron is a fourteen year old meantioned in the song 'superlungs my supergirl' who was a big hit on the scene. If you don't believe me then ask the man himself. |
