I'm so sad someone beat me to the Freudian imagery - why do you get to sound like the intellectual? :-P "It boiled up like a tower A monument in the park It's the cock of a rifle The memory in the dark..." |

| Bright Eyes – A Poetic Retelling of an Unfortunate Seduction Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I've always kind of felt that Conor made a better poet than he did a songwriter and this song is a great example of that. In an age like this when we are all so mesmerized by television and radio, most people don't seem to appreciate the finer arts such as poetry. I love how Conor has taken advantage of this and how he's almost exploited his music career in order to put words out there that truly do qualify as poetry. He's found a way to reach us with his words. I really do love Bright Eyes - they're one of my favorite bands, but it took me awhile to enjoy listening to them (as opposed to just reading his lyrics) - they're definitely an aquired taste. But what I love about about Conor is he has sort of an ironic attitude towards his own music ("I could have been a famous singer, if I had someone else's voice, but failures always sounded better..." --Road to Joy) But I love this idea of fractured and aesthetically unappealing art - I don't always like the way it sounds, but it sure as hell provokes me, and isn't that what art is meant to do? So in a lot of ways, I feel like this song is beautiful in its ugliness... The lyrics themselves are beautiful -- but isn't beautiful art sort of boring? Everyone expects art to be beautiful -- I love how Conor has taken his poetry and put it into a different medium where it can be more provocative. | |
