Damien Rice – Silent Night Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's just evidence of his genius to use Silent Night and transform it. And Lisa Hannigan does a hauntingly beautiful job of singing it.

OneRepublic – Prodigal Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song so much...It's has such a great sound to it and really amazing lyrics. I think it's the story of the prodigal son applied to a love relationship, though I suppose it could just be intended as any kind of relationship. I listened to it as a love song personally, and I think that's a brilliant idea, to superimpose that story onto one about love. He leaves, takes everything, and she waits for him, she'll "take anything" from, because she loves him. And he eventually comes back, because he needs her. Really fantastic song.

Imogen Heap – The Moment I Said It Lyrics 19 years ago
Beautiful song.
I think it's about a relationship where things are going wrong, and she brings it up to make things better, and he wants to bail. She wants to wait to talk about it, but he leaves. And she realizes as soon as she's said it that it's all going to fall apart.

The Calling – Could It Be Any Harder Lyrics 19 years ago
You know it's so weird... I've been listening to this song for so many years and being so in love with it, always assuming it was about an ended relationship, and of course him still being in love with her. And then all of the sudden for the time, it hit me today that it must be about death- the words make even more sense that way ("to touch you again with life in your hands," "you were always invinicible in my eyes/the only thing against us now is time," etc...). But then, that's what I love about music... it can be interpreted in so many ways and mean different things to everyone, having its own unique power in each interpretation.
That being said, whatever was intended, the element of heartbreak in this song is beautiful. The music, the lyrics... everything combines to make what is, in my opinion, one of the greatest songs of all time.

Adam Pascal – Which Way To Nowhere Lyrics 20 years ago
this song is amazing. i think it's pretty straight forward. it's about someone he loves who has had a really hard time in a past relationship, and he wants to let her know that he'll be there for her when everything falls apart, even though the whole situation is sort of wearing him down.

stipe has said that the song is about falling in love. i love that metaphor... "losing my religion" as falling in love.

Melissa Etheridge – Nowhere To Go Lyrics 20 years ago
this is probably my favorite melissa song. it is so powerful. extremely commanding. it can be interpreted to be about any sort of scorned relationship, but logically it is about a gay relationship and having nowhere to go because the people around them "never woke up from the american dream." it's not only such a passionate love song; it also delivers a poignant message about our often close-minded society. here is a couple so much in love but they have to hide away because society cannot accept them- they don't understand the relationship because they label it as wrong and don't really look at the people involved. an absolute musical gem. the pain in her voice during the lines "dance with me forever/this moment is divine/i'm so close to heaven/this hell is not mine/this hell is not mine" never fails to give me goosebumps. beautiful.

U2 – Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is so emotional and touching. When I first heard it, I thought it was a love song- I didn't catch onto the "opera's in me" part and wonder what that was about. It's really touching to know that it is about his father, but I think you can still listen to it as a love song... in a romantic way, in a family way. We all act tougher than we are sometimes, and we all have people we love who do the same. This song is an amazing way of reaching out to that person, and it means so much to me, as I'm sure it does to many. It really has the ability to make me cry. Especially the "listen to me now" parts, and the bridge, because it's so passionate.
meathook- thanks for sharing that. I can imagine how emotional it would be for him to sing this at his father's funeral.

Switchfoot – This Is Your Life Lyrics 20 years ago
This song always really affects me when it comes on. Not only is the music the kind that can really get inside you, the lyrics are so inspirational. It's the type of song that makes you stop and think. I love that Switchfoot is so original... I'm a sucker for love songs, but I genuinely appreciate that all of their songs aren't love songs... they're about living. That's something EVERYONE can relate to.

This song is absolutely amazing. Particuarly the last part with the passion Adam sings "the lungs breathe" and the "life goes on but i'm gone cause i die without you" part. What a beautiful love song.

Matchbox Twenty – Bed Of Lies Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is pretty straightforward, yet it's beautiful. He's obviously in a relationship in which he either feels that the love is unreciprocated, or he feels that it's coming to a dead end, like when you're with someone and maybe at one time it was an amazing relationship, but you don't feel like you can talk anymore, and it has become hollow and empty and you're unconnected. In either scenario, he is trying to find strength to end the relationship, but he obviously still loves the person. "i am all that i'll ever be when you lay your hands over me/so don't go weak on me please/i know that it's weak but god help me i need this"- he knows he needs to go, and stop living in the bed of lies, but he has too much of a weakness for her. Really touching, emotional and beautiful song.

Switchfoot – On Fire Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is, to me, one of the singuarly most amazing songs in the world, if not the most amazing. I cried when I saw them perform it in concert, and I cry almost every time I hear it. It is so beautiful, from the music, to the words. It can definitely be interpreted as being both about God and love. I'm religious, and i'm also a sucker for passionate love songs, so I choose to look at in both ways. Switchfoot rarely seems to have songs with a simple meaning.
The "burning at these mysteries" line is the line that makes it most inescapably related to God. But there are many parts that relate it to a girl. The idea is the same... sort of half living, in a world that doesn't really understand you, but you know there's more for you. And there's someone that makes you feel on fire, whether it is God or someone you love. Someone that makes you feel alive, and makes you feel like you can be a better person (my favorite part: When everything inside me looks like everything I hate, you are the hope I have for change, you are the only chance i'll take) It is about the beauty of a relationship, and a person who can mean that much to you.
The first few times I heard it, I wondered if it could have to do with unrequited love though... "you're on fire when he's near you" and then "i'm on fire when you're near me." But that's not really the way I look at it.
I think the idea that 2 people wrote it with 2 different intentions is very believable, and that way people can interpret it in multiple ways.

Switchfoot – The Shadow Proves The Sunshine Lyrics 20 years ago
Actually this song was written after the band went to Africa, and after seeing everything that was wrong there, there was still so much spirit and happiness. So it's a reflection on America, in light of their experience there, I believe.

Switchfoot – Politicians Lyrics 20 years ago
I saw them at the Nothing is Sound tour, and as AiR7oN said, Foreman said it was misunderstood. He said it comes across as being anitestablishment, but in fact it's about knowing that there is something better than what we have right now. I love the music as well as the message.

Fuel – Falls on Me Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm not really suggesting that this what the song is about, cause I think when I listened to it the first few times, I only really picked up on certain lines that formed this idea in my head, but I figured I'd share anyway.... The part that got me thinking of it was "The darkness in my veins
I never could explain
And I wonder if you ever see
Will you still believe"
When I heard that, I thought of Superman (when he was Clark Kent), and the blood in his veins... how it wasn't like other people's, and it held his secret that he couldn't show the people he loved. And the part about "I might save your life, I might save our world, could you save me"--- Superman saves the world, but needs saving himself. And the chorus of course would refer to either Lana or Lois.
I think I was a little too influenced by Smallville when I heard this song, but even though this is far fetched, maybe if anyone here watches Smallville, they'd understand where I'm coming from.

I'm sure the actual meaning is either about a girl or about God-- I'm leaning toward girl. Either way it's amazing.
