| Strapping Young Lad – Shine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| The way I read this is as a struggle between two states within himself. He's feeling lost and clouded, imperfect and muddled, but he knows there's a shining, electric being inside of him. As he reaches out for it, he's ultimately unsuccessful and is being dragged back down into knowledge that he'll never be that perfect shining being, that he's boring and worthless just like everyone else. | |
| Iron & Wine – Freedom Hangs Like Heaven Lyrics | 20 years ago |

In my eyes, it's Joseph delivering this song since it's addressed to Mary. He's saying "I'll do anything you want me to" and "carry my name", pointing out that "hoof marks hacked up all I had to offer you", perhaps pointing out that he lost all that he had in that manger. She won't just say that the child is his though. The refrain can apply to any child the way I hear it. Freedom is what allows for sin and shame, and any child, but especially Jesus, is born pure without sin. |
