I absolutely love this song, sounds beautiful and i can really relate to it.. About the meaning: I agree with a couple of previous posters in that it's a song about maynard talking to a friend with passive-aggressive disorder (he even says so at the very end of the song!), from about the same standpoint as 'the outsider'. First the doctor diagnoses his passive-aggressive friend, but maynard can't believe it's actually a disorder and thinks he can pinch through that 'mask' and snap him out of it by saying he'll just walk away if he doesn't change, which is eventually what he does because he's pissed off and doesn't understand his friend can't do anything about it. Passive-aggressiveness is a disorder which makes you want to please everyone, so you say yes and amen to everything, and then not do it if you don't want to. You generally just don't do anything you don't want to. You procrastinate all the time and are passive as hell (hence the name). To outsiders it's almost as if you're sleeping all the time, so that's why maynard is talking about waking up. |
