| Elliott Smith – Ballad of Big Nothing Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
Read the book, Elliott Smith and The Big Nothing. It will shed some light on the meanings of all of his songs. At the time this song was written, Elliott hadn't tried hard drugs. He was always toying with the notion of doing heroin, but he wasnt an addict.
He uses drugs and addiction as metaphors for relationships. This song is meant to be ironic with its chorus. Its almost an anti-anthem, to borrow words from the book. What he's saying is that you can't really do whatever you want to without affecting someone else. Its the no man is an island type thing. |
