Joni Mitchell – People's Parties Lyrics 20 years ago
Photo Beauty is crying on someone's knee, after she laughing...

I tihnk Eddie, and Jack, and Grace, are all just Jane and John Doe's... but she's gone into a bit more detail with theri personalities. They are names for the people at this party that, up front, she's watching.

I love the way this song is put together. Very string-of-thought. And it returns to herself. Like most of us do. Whenever we stray, we some back to tihnking about ourselves, especially when we're not happy with ourselves.

She explores the range of human emotions, and to a certain extent, poses a question about our natures. So many people, coming to a party, most likely looking to have a good time, and ending up feeling and experiencing so many different things.

Jimmy Eat World – A Praise Chorus Lyrics 20 years ago
I'd always thought he was saying "So come on, David, sing me something that I know," assuming it was a reference to David, who wrote (and supposedly sang) the Psalms of the Bible. I'm not a religious person (at all), and it's perfectly likely that that reference was not their intention, but it does add a beautiful dimension to the song. Like Xabian said, the song seems to be a love song to music, more specifically to rock and roll. I think it talks about spirit, and soul, and involving it in your life ("Are you gonna live your life wonderin'" etc.) and how we so often get that kind of energy, enthusiasm, and inspiration from music. A biblical reference adds a spiritual tinge to it, emphasising the spiritual aspect of music, especially the kind that they highlight in the song- the kind that inspires us to live life to its fullest.
