the song is very good. its about someone trying to help their friend see the world differently.0 it switches from 1st to 3rd persion, which is pretty confusing, but the meaning is the same. just a guy who is too 'low' and sees the world too unilaterally. i love this song |

Nobody has mentioned yet, this song is defintely about loneliness. Paul, the singer, is feeling ignored. The music goes with it too, giving a sense of longing and slowness. Public Pervert -- im my opinion, this is defintely someone who no isolated and probably a loner Paul is acting like a public pervert to regain his confidence or relationship. read hands away, interpol |

I am rarely convinced by lyrics. For one reason or another, lyrics never seem to make sense or even give a central idea. Also, lyrics are WAYYY too associated with love/sex/m-f relationships, which in my opinion, do not deserve the title of 'love.' This song deals with a truer, more powerful bond between parents and their children. I just want to tear up all the comments about how this song is about a man and a woman, cause they do not even deserve to take space here!!!! (jk) This song is so unique, in that it's so powerful and not overly glorious at the same time. This song is basically, as everyone slowlys says, a message from parents to growing (grown) up children. In a metaphoric sense, it's like when someone plays with a kite and feels like its just time to let go and let the kite soar away. Going in a little more in detail, the song is a muse about someone passing on experience to their children. In other words, it was like when my dad warned me about how cold the real world is, and that to survive, we need both mental and physically 'think skin.' I must mention this song is so wise: it summarizes a beautiful attitude towards human death! I am always so godamn pissed when I hear people moan about death and all the time they have left to live. This song describes death so casually, so indirectly, that it is perfectly fine to die. The only concern of death is the well-being of children, and that's the exact point of the song! why cry when the song is one to celebrate? just understand it correctly! (ok i admit, the song is moving) I was not much of a fan of U2, but this song completely changes my opinion. it also shows that rockstars DO think about their parents! si tienes tiempo, check out my comment on interpol's 'hands away' |

I must say after reading the many thoughts above, I see many different perspectives, some more far-fetched and others more broad. WELL, I'M JUST GONNA SAY, THIS SONG VERY MUCH RELATES TO THE MOVIE: "Valentin" keep it on a hotlist of movies, its in spanish though. tell me about it after you see it ;) |

All the interpretations above are not quite close to what I believe. I have a reasonable and approcable sense of this song lyrically, while the music is just phenominal. In a general sense, the song is about guilt, not romance, homosexuality, or hunger (ham :P). It did take me awhile to realize this, but it becomes verrry obvious when you do. Lets go a little deeper: This guy, john, is in a store and wants to shoplift a laser-pen or something. He talking to someone or even no one, asking him, "stop me from doing this!" In order words, he feels extremely tempted to steal the laserpen, and doesn't have enough self-control over his 'id.' The second stanza is simply that he can't control himself and decides to steal the pen. 'Serve it up, I'll do it" After a long musical interlude, he comes out desperately, "OMG, why can't I control myself?! I am such a fool. "Homespun," if any of your guys have even spent half a minute to look up, means something homemade or produced by one person. This guilt, john feels, is created by himself. Now, he even though he gets his laser-pen, he cannot get over the guilt of commiting the crime. Finnaly, my favorite line is the last. The way the music flows into it and his voice..o...so well polished. It says, even though John didn't get caught stealing that laser-pen, there is always a sense of interal guilt in himself. What music and meaning, I love this song! |
