Anberlin – A Day Late Lyrics 20 years ago
But I must confess
You're so much more than I remember
Can't help but entertain this thought
Thoughts of us together
.....
So let me get this straight
All these years and you were nowhere to be found
And now you want me for your own
But you're a day late
And my love, she's still renowned

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In both parts, he's referring to the years apart, they didn't talk. They didn't think badly of eachother, but maybe she left the area, moved on....and when she tells him, he's like..wait a second...you couldn't tell me this years ago, when you were here? when we were friends? You can still be my "Day Late Friend" but nothing more, but we'll see what the future holds.
GOSH...other than the significant others part, this is just very much like my situation, and it's very sad. -.-
and I heard this song for the first time only after telling this friend my feelings.
If it weren't for distance or the fact that now we both have children involved (he has a son, I have a daughter, and in both situations it's a joint custody), nothing would be stopping us.
Anberlin – Paperthin Hymn Lyrics 20 years ago
he might have dedicated the song to his grandma, he might have written it about a friend of his though. Regardless, have you ever moved away from family/friends to get a phone call that someone is in the hospital and needs someone there to help them? Say you don't have a home where that person's specializing hospital is at? You are forced to stay in a hotel in order to be close to the one you love...making the hotel room a sort of "friend" and a place that does in fact bring you closer to your loved one.
now, books...books can be written about all sorts of people, doesn't mean they will be dedicated to that person.
This song has meaning to me, as it reminds me of a journal I got the nerve to write to a guy that I've had feelings for now 16 yrs, and haven't seen him for 8 years. "paper hearts stopped beating" and the fact that the song is called "Paperthin Hymn" which gives the feel of the journal...it's completely paperthin, but in and of itself, it's magnificent.
I can't wait to hear the rest of the cd, the video was astounding/surprising, and I'm not quite sure I get the end, cuz the end is so unexpected.
Funeral for a Friend – History Lyrics 20 years ago
Dear friends of this academy
Oh, Romeo is bleeding to death
To see a friend bleed to death
What for? some kind of metaphor that I can't see
So I'll drink until I see it
!!!What he's saying here, appears to be that he himself is bleeding to death (refer to following text. Romeo is a love stricken person. Cupid's arrow has afflicted his heart. Romeo has been a friend to him in a Romeo-is-self type of sense. (same as a young girl believing she's juliet or a princess, etc). He's determining what to make of the metaphor of Romeo bleeding to death.!!!
This sky will make me sick
So I'll give up on you
I'll give up on this
This sky will make me sick
So I'll give up on this
I'll give up on you
!!!Cupid lives in the sky. Cupid randomly shoots off arrows. This almost begins to insinuate that the girl he is writing about has shot him in the heart with an arrow. He's pissed off and hurt, therefore, giving up.!!!
Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine
!!!In Retaliation, he is saying that he himself is going to write this song to hurt her back. The same as the English vs. the French. They are now at war. He's going to tear the hell out of the sky. He's going to get that arrow to stab her heart too. They have the same history, afterall. As a guy previously mentioned, "The longbow, in the English army, was the source of the classic two finger gesture (the two finger salute), which was originaly directed towards the French as a way of showing that you still had them (they tended to cut of the fingers of bowmen who they captured) and were going to use them to kill a few people now." So, effectively, this may be saying that he's not quite dead, and he's still got his fingers to shoot off one last arrow at her.!!!
So you want to hold me up an bring me down?
Yes, you want to hold me up and break me down
!!!She led him to the sky and pierced his heart with those arrows. !!!
But I don't care for your sweet scent
Or the way you want me more than I want you
I don't care for your sweet scent
Or the way you want me more than I want you
!!!At this point he's saying, he doesn't care that she loves him. He doesn't care about cupid's arrows. He's more than willing to retaliate and could care less in such a war!!!
Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
I'll bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine
It's all mine...
It's all mine...
It's all mine...
!!!He's taking advantage of the present to make history how he wants it. Without a broken heart.!!!
Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
I'll bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine
!!!This is a difficult song to interpret. The metaphors are there. Arrows have been known to refer to love (imagine the image of a heart with the arrow pierced through it). Same with Romeo. If Romeo is bleeding to death, it's probably due to an arrow, and due to the reference, it makes it clear. The two fingers probably represent life: "one last salute" being his last figurative breath. In retaliation for her hurting him, he takes that breath knowing that he will be releasing his love for her and throwing that last stab at her so that she knows she's hurt him, but that he has the capabilities of revenge and getting back. he knows he's going to be over her and over the relationship and the history of it, and is using that to his advantage.!!!
Thoughts:
!!!While this was a really drawn out and detailed post, I've thought about this for two days straight and came to that conclusion. It's almost difficult to put into words appropriately, and still I feel my words do not do the interpretted meaning any justice. Just food for thought. Very incredible song.!!!
Cute Is What We Aim For – Lyrical Lies Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this band, this song rocks too...what it means?...well...
probably what it's mostly about:
those times when you want to say something but you don't, and then you don't have the chance afterward, you never see the person again.
possibly even the girl of his affection is sleeping on his bed and he can't even get the words to come out when she's awake, so saying them when she's asleep, but unable to say them when she's awake...
there are definitely multiple meanings in there...depending on the angle.
no matter what, it's pure magic
according to my two year old, the best part of the song is "it starts stopping when it stops stopping" she sings along (almost*) every time. (*minus mid-tantrum)
Something Corporate – Me And The Moon Lyrics 20 years ago
at the point where he says "but he's not here"....he's talking about jesus, cuz it's the same feeling you'd get around your parents. if you did something horrible and you find your parents know, and you feel guilty even moreso when they do know and you know that, then you cry....I think that's why she didn't cry, cuz she prayed to jesus, but he wasn't there, so she wasn't going to cry. whether she was killing herself or her husband...
if she is killing herself, as some have implied, she may possibly have split her wrist...trigger can represent anything, cut wrists...hell, she could've cut and gone about her business, even popped a couple pills to get "high", gone, made dinner, made the dishwater dirty with her blood (that was possibly also on the carpet) and then the people who would rush her away? paramedics...either way, it works. I've decided the words he sounds like he's singing "her blood" not "the blood"...but I know that tons of people have watched the interview and have gotten/gathered the fact that he was writing it about a homicide, not suicide.
that's just my two cents..didn't see that anybody had mentioned the jesus thing, I just wanted to point out that the husband might not've been actually at the scene if suicide was committed, and that even if he was, she is probably not crying/upset because she doesn't believe jesus is there anymore [for her, at least].
