He's saying how in the army you are conditioned to be essentially a robot. They tell you what to do to the point that you can't even do anything on your own. I think the line "Permission to breathe sir" sums it up pretty well.

This is such a powerful song, I've heard it compared to Stairway to Heaven because of it's intensity. I think this song is mocking the attitude that living in a housing complex where everything is the same and life is so easy is the highesIt acheivement we can make. I don't like the voice when he sings about all the houses having the same name and the other stuff, but that whole stanza has so much meaning. This is one of their best.

I'm not sure how this song can be racist, because it's about the whole human race. Buy anyways, great song. I think Ray was a true romantic (in the true definition of the word, not the pepe le pew type of romantic). Many of Ray's songs deal with going back to the simple life (see the whole Village Green album, waterloo sunset, and many other songs) My only complaint is that the lyrics are difficult to understand at first, which is a shame because they are so meaningful.

I'm not sure if this happened before or after this song, but Isaac had his jaw broken one night when he got hit by some teenagers after he was talking to them while he was drunk. This is probably where the jaw lyric came from.
