Skinny Puppy – Hexonxonx Lyrics 20 years ago
Hex On Exxon is right. It's about the Valdez disaster in which the Exxon tanker Valdez shyted it and dumped WORLDS of crude oil into the seas off the coast of Alaska. I still remember pictures of animals black as pitch standing there as though they didn't know what had hit them.

SP have always been fiercely environmentalist.

Skinny Puppy – Worlock Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't think it's "blue/hot" but "blue-hot". As opposed to "red-hot". Blue hot lines speak to lines drawn (on the floor? pentagram?) bearing power. In another of their songs there's an excerpt from a movie that goes, "Nothing can penetrate this barrier...it has the strength of a million souls; the power of the DEAD". In fact, I believe it was on this album somewhere. Anyway, it's consistent with the theme of this album and, strangely enough, several others. And the track's entitled "Worlock" :) .

I don't believe the song has a "literal" meaning, though. I remember word lists becoming popular after SP's lyrics got around. I believe they may have been painting with words for much of this. Using words to invoke moods or create an atmosphere while abstractly describing something specific. And that only because I wrote a lot of poetry in h.s. and have done it before.

What is the relationship, if any, between heroin and satanism?

I'm angry that a band this talented punked out to drugs and had to suffer the loss of the engineer before they got a grip. But things happen as they do for a reason. SP have always been a fascinating and talented band.

Skinny Puppy – VX Gas Attack Lyrics 20 years ago
This song was my absolute favorite off this album. The drilling was tight and the bass was present and solid. Much of the lyrical content was spoken and what was sung was sung clearly so that the meaning of the song was never really lost on me.

SP were one of the first bands I ever heard sing lyrics that read like word lists. I remember them making that popular.

Skinny Puppy – Who's Laughing Now? Lyrics 20 years ago
The lyrics here appear without the background voices which sound angry and, I could swear, are saying something barely intelligible ending in the "N-word". At one point, the angry voice says that thing again and as it finishes, Ogre says the bit about her (the voice is female) puking "her point". For this reason, for the longest time I thought this song was about racism. Anger, insecurity and stupidity were all described against that angry, intermittent backdrop.

However, I know the band were involved in a lot of drug abuse- particularly at the time this song was done. The engineer died from a heroin overdose. "...push down with the purest crystal around...push it in..." invokes images of drug abuse. So now I'm thinking this song was written about Mick Jagger's gardener (see Jumpin Jack Flash).

The Rolling Stones – Jumpin Jack Flash Lyrics 20 years ago
I'm an artist and I've pulled a few fat ones off in my time quite by accident. So I can accept that the most mundane crap can be stuck together to make an accidental hit at times, but "Gardener"?

The hurricane and howling at a mom all day doesn't say, "lawnmower man" to me. Sorry. Unless Lucifer did their lawn? Maybe that was it! Was the B-Side to this single, "Satan Is My Grounds Keeper"? In fact, I could stomach the lot of them shooting up heroin with Legion before I could take "Gardener". "Getting High With Satan" was probably the track's original name, based on what I hear about Keith Richards and his outworldly drug repertoire at that time. I've been told Keith did more drugs than there WERE in the 60s.
