ecboarder-- Pearl Jam wrote it first. "Yellow Ledbetter" was a b-side to "Jeremy," which was written for their album "Ten" in 1991 and released as a single the following year. Shepherd's version wasn't released until 1995. Interestingly, that album also includes a song called "Aberdeen" about a Southern town (probably Aberdeen, Mississippi). Aberdeen is also the home town of Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic and is consequently known as an origin of Grunge music, a genre to which Pearl Jam once belonged. Looks like Sheperd was more influenced by PJ than vice-versa, as you seem to imply. |

First of all, the second line of the chorus is "We can move the air," as quoted from the album's liner notes. Second, I don't get the Soundgarden comparison... I think this sounds just like Neil Young. Listen to anything off of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere--Cinnamon Girl, in particular--and then listen to this song. It's uncanny. |

This song is about a girl who opens a guy to all the things in the world he never knew he was missing. She loves him despite all the unlovable things he sees about himself (his "scars"). While the song ends with the two having sex, that's not the point. They love each other beyond sex. Normally I have pretty shallow tastes in music, basing my favorite songs on what sounds the best. But this song speaks to me, because I lived it. |
