Flyleaf – Perfect Lyrics 19 years ago
"How can you look at me when I can't stand myself?" That's the best line! It's one of the wonderful graces of God. He loves you always, even when you don't. And through his love you can learn to look yourself in the mirror again.
This song is so intense.
"All *my* efforts to clean me leave me putrid and filthy." We talked about this at my church. Another name for Him is Jehovah Tsidkenu which is "The Lord my Righteousness." Only God can make you clean and right and pure. There's nothing we can do to make ourselves better other than praying for an increased closeness with God and for his blessing.

Flyleaf – All Around Me Lyrics 19 years ago
It's funny because at first it sounds alot like it's just a make-out song sort of track, but it's obvious that it's about prayer and praise. The crazy high feeling you get sometimes when you talk to God. It actually does feel a lot like falling in love. It's so powerful...
There is this burning feeling that tears through you, your heart just swells and you feel all loose, and then it's like nothing else in the world matters. Everything else just leaves you alone and you feel as if God is holding you to his heart.. It's amazing!!
That's definetly what this song is about.

Flyleaf – So I Thought Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's "Chorus romance." Chorus as in song structure.
Going on that I think they mean that it's like a relationship that was short, sweet, catchy, addictive, repeating, but overall pretty unimportant. That's my interpretation of the song. Also I think its good to point out that the song could be about being infatuated with a lifestyle. Falling in love with rock and roll glamour - destructive people places, grungy cheap ways of living, the whole "sex drugs rock and roll" thing... when you're young "too young" it seems appealing and cool, but it could lead to depression and disatisfaction. She, or the speaker of the song, manages to find Him between all of the dark craziness. .. This is what I take away from the song.

Ha! p00p00
I LOVE songs that make me look up words. I learn a lot that way. I comprehend most of this song, and other tracks by the Decemberists, but Of Montreal's lyrics have got M-W.com working overtime.
I am off to look up "pachyderm" and this Oscar Wilde story foriegn_hand mentioned.

The Decemberists – The Sporting Life Lyrics 20 years ago
fadetoflashes, I agree with marykay- that's so adorable! Do you sort of do that 'shake your head and sigh' thing and sing along when exhale? It's so what I imagine the coach doing.
this song is so wonderful, it tells the story just flawlessly and it's so funny too.
"fulfill all his old athletic aspirations but apparently now there's some complications"
Oh yes, apparently. There's only a stadium full of people brought to a screeching halt fixated on your withering exhausted body all mangled on the field.

"I'll prove to the crowd that I come out stronger (though I think I might lie here a little longer)"
Yup, I'll take the high road!! I'll triumph and be heroic!! I'll inspire you all in the most amazing ways!!! -but ya know, in a little bit....
FANTASTIC!

The Decemberists – Of Angels and Angles Lyrics 20 years ago
I haven't begun my own interpretation of this song yet but I like the idea trisweb started but I think universal remonster really hit the mark with the idea that the theme is dominantly romantic.
Being together, and such a compliment.
Reminds me of the poetry I've been reading for my Lit class, where most everyone compares their love to goddesses and such. It's very classic and I think that a wonderful way to look at this song.

Fascinating idea MurderRapeLove, I just played the song and tried to listen to it. I'll have to go through a few more times to really get it but your interpretation does make some sense. Truly fascinating! Thanks for sharing

The Cure – Alt.End Lyrics 20 years ago
I adore the Cure, but I'm not a proper fan.. All I wanted to say write down the first line of this song as a quote, and the paradox is endlessly amusing -at least to me! Robert Smith in all of his dark iconic glory saying "It's a big, bright, beautiful world out there." Makes me smile everytime.

Franz Ferdinand – Come on Home Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song. There are sooo many songs about LDR's out there and this one has a really refreshing spin on the situation. Plus it sounds gorgeous.
(Long Distance Relationships)
...Oh, i don't agree with some of the previous comments. It think there are emotions and feelings attached -at least on the speakers side of the 'relationship'- But I'm idealistic and romantic so, y'all could be right.

Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics 20 years ago
Anyone who can't appreciate the song for how it's written, is disapointing but it's also kind of funny. *shrug* Funny thing is I actually knew a girl named Mycheal in my freshman year. ...Anyways I think the song is sexy and fun. I'm sad to hear they leave out "this is what I am I am a man" at live shows. That's so undoubtedly the best part!!! It's such a liberating song, and I find that particular line to be so charming- the tone of his voice in the recording, it's so -proud- and pompous and matter-o'-factly sounding. "I am a Man" just erases any doubt of homosexuality. It's so rad. I LOVE that!

"I'm drinking spirits in the hopes that I will find myself one." That is one of my top five all-time favorite song lyrics.

Nelly Furtado – Explode Lyrics 20 years ago
I just love the "it's a fight...and it's spinning" That's awesome! So biting, it's wonderful. I also love her voice just after that bit and towards the end, she's sort of crying "we're counting the stars" it's so thrilling.

Alexz Johnson – Skin Lyrics 20 years ago
I get chills whenever I hear this. One of the most intense "I HATE You" songs since.... a while. It's right up there with "You Oughta Know" for me. So powerful. I love it. The words are pretty simple and not too out of the ordinary, but actually *listening* to the song, and the story it goes to with the tv show (Instant Star)- WOW. It's completely stunning. It totally captures the feeling of being crushed by three men in your life at once.

Nirvana – Polly Lyrics 20 years ago
Eeks! Debating and name calling. Fantastic forum, we've got going here. lol. Anyways that is fascinating that it "Polly" was inspired by an actual event! I had assumed it was entirely fictional and just imagined. Nice trivia!
Anyways I LOVE this song. I just adore the tone of it. It's so dark and rather awful, but it's performed with such a sort of casuality and distance...non-chalant. It's brilliant. I think the tone makes "Polly" really riveting and thought-provoking. It's morbidly hilarious. Brilliant!
A lot of my own writing has that sort of humor and tone about it, so I can appreciate the familiarity or the ispiration it gave me.

Straylight Run – Existentialism on Prom Night Lyrics 20 years ago
Incredibly pretty lyrics, gorgeous sound, cool video too. But I gotta say, if the topics of existentialism came up on my prom night heads would roll. I don't have a good relationship with the concepts and philosophies of Existentialism, It's a major source of depression for me. So I think the song title -while it sounds cool- is VERY ironic.

The Get Up Kids – Action and Action Lyrics 20 years ago
responding to i_love_geeky_guys's comments. I know what you mean. Their lyrics can be sort of applied and interpreted in a lot of different ways. I admit, I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out what their words mean and just try to feel and listen to general mood of the songs.
And thank goodness! One person who agrees- One the Wire was a good album! I liked it, it's different but it's definetly not bad.

The Get Up Kids – I'll Catch You Lyrics 20 years ago
I feel the same way as everyone else- BEAUTIFUL song. One of most romantic ones I've ever heard. Genuine feel, not to sappy. It's flawless. 'cept I never did get what the "Jinx Removing" bit is about. Someone mentioned it's a Jawbreakers song so I'm on my way to look in to it.
I will note that I'm an MCR fan, and I discovered a still shot of Frank Iero in a t-shirt with "Jamia" written on it (apparently the love of his life), and "Jinx Removing" written larger underneath. I immediately thought of "I'll Catch You" and
I think it's so sweet how the song can apply on such personal levels to people in their actual relationships.
Me, I'm still waiting for the day when I can feel this beautifully about another person, but in the meantime I fully adore this song and its sentiment.

The Get Up Kids – Overdue Lyrics 20 years ago
Whoa, I had no idea people weren't liking this album. Shocking, I thought it was pretty good. I haven't heard Eudora, or Four Minute yet but I I've got all their other recordings. Lyrically On A Wire has some awesome stuff. Overdue, Campfire Kansas, Hannah Hold On, Walking on a Wire... and what's wrong with the sound? It's not completely off. ...eh, what do I know? I'm still in awe over "Something to..." I even can't begin to not adore The Get-Up Kids.

Radiohead – Creep Lyrics 20 years ago
I've gotta admit I never really listened to the song until just yesterday- when it was featured on reality television. ...pathetic, I know.
I had a friend who always mentioned that she loved this song. She was an interesting character- talented, really beautiful, and generally a very nice polite girl. But she was always under a lot of pressure and I only saw fractions of her sadness in the time that I knew her.
When I heard the song, my heart broke.
You can feel like a 'creep' no matter who you are and I know this song was her anthem and I just wish I could have known her better.
Truly powerful, beautifully simplistic lyrics. (the only non - OK Computer track I really like by Radiohead.)

Bright Eyes – Landlocked Blues Lyrics 20 years ago
XianSnake, interesting. I never really thought about it as a suicide themed song. I understand how you got to that interpretation, and while I don't necessarily prefer to think of "Landlocked" having that particular message your comments were very thought provoking. It's slightly creepy and entirely impressive how intricate Conor's songs can be, to have so many different messages to so many different people.

Bright Eyes – Landlocked Blues Lyrics 20 years ago
woah, Souldier, you so helped me appreciate this song more on it's political level. You make an interesting point, and I'm glad you shared your feelings on this song.
The first time I heard it I was way too caught up on just the more personal aspects of the words. ...Actually the first part time I listened to this song I completely freaked out. It's a different story... I was in a bad place and the 4th and 9th verses about Laura, and the sex.. I couldn't bear to hear about it. My violent reactions ruined the song for a little bit to me, but now I can focus more on the war philosophy messages.

Bright Eyes – Arienette Lyrics 20 years ago
NickDogg's interpretation works best for me. (Thanks BTW for sharing!) I think Arrientte is a protector. Someone to love and help heal the fever. Whether or not she helps by mere presence, influence, or in ways a bit more tangible I'm not sure. But I like this explaination. It makes sense when she's again mentioned in "Sunrise Sunset." -Which is an unbelievably important (and vexing) theme song in my life- "Where are you Arienette?" After reviewing the duality concepts in that song you'd be crying out for some help too.
