| The 1975 – Me Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I actually suspect this may be Matt commenting on his mothers history and a working through of his feelings towards her. She had an abortion, and also attempted to commit suicide following his birth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denise_Welch. If thats the case, this song is heartbreaking and poignant. | |

It's actually: In his dads closet or in a box or something, I don't even know what. But he's coming for you, yeah he's coming for you |

| Gotye – Eyes Wide Open Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| 60 miles an hour is spot on, that's clearly the meaning of the song. I love that it's almost like an ode to humanity, written as if the world has already collapsed and failed. | |
| White Lies – Bigger Than Us Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| To me, this song is literally what it says. A couple are having an argument/relationship breakdown, and are involved in a crash. It makes him realise there are things in life that are bigger than what's happening in their relationship. He doesn't want to die in that situation, and the car crash is bigger/ more important than their relationship issues. | |
| The Jezabels – Hurt Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I think Enthused Punk has a pretty cool interpretation - but i'd say maybe not a brother because she says 'baby'? It sounds like a bitter long-lost relationship to me. Hayley keeps saying 'when you're able' so to me it seems as though able/Abel is a bit of a double entendre in that she literally means 'when you're Abel'. It seems like she sees this person as having two sides - 'Abel' when he's away from her but it seems like when he is he's around her he's a different (less loving?) person. So she's reconciling these two part of him and it seems to me she's saying 'come round and treat me nice and be happy when you're 'Abel', but we both know it's just you that hurts me so don't pretend to be someone else'. I also think her talking about having a dream about him having 'half a face' and using a 'mask' kind of supports my notion. |

| Interpol – Try It On Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Easily my favourite song off the album. It's about a relationship that's not working out, but the girl is trying to hold on - 'You wanna see that There's no change' and so is he. He's trying to console himself (and the girl) by saying that 'Well if you're right, I'll put my keys back'. But ultimately he knows it's going nowhere - 'Please endure my love's exhortations, No way, No fucking way'. Pretty bitter song but that's basically Paul's style. |

| Interpol – All of the Ways Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Couple of obvious corrections: 'Does he lead you to the fight' no' 'leave you to the flames' Also, i'm pretty sure he's saying 'Tween Neophyte' - (tween being barely/young twenties) it's a demeaning reference to the guy. Obviously about jealousy that his ex has found someone new/ maybe left him for a new person. It's very bitter song. To me the shivering guitars remind me a lot of 'The Lighthouse' - beautiful song. |

| Florence + the Machine – My Boy Builds Coffins Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| This is the most spot on explanation I have read. Everyone else is either taking it too literally or far too abstractly. I feel that this is quite obviously the meaning of the song, whether or not the original idea came from a boyfriend. Basically it's about the impermanence of our existence. | |
| Circa Survive – Frozen Creek Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Quite a few of their songs very obviously influenced by eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, especially on Juturna, most notably 'meet me in montauk' (which is actually a line from the movie itself). This is one. Multiple sources also cite the movie as an inspiration for Green's songwriting, and i highly doubt that this isn't so. I wouldn't be surprised if that comment was simply to keep people interested or because they are sick of talking about the correlation. Music artists, actors and other creative industries people often do that. It wasn't a direct lie as such - i doubt any of the songs are *about* eternal sunshine, they just heavily draw on the themes as well as Anthony's own life. |

| Grizzly Bear – Slow Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Kristenn, pretty sure your lyrics are the most wrong i have ever seen. They don't even match the vowel sounds of what the singers are singing. The lyrics that have been posted are completely correct, with the only possible mistake being 'from the wind in front of me'. |

| Lisa Mitchell – Pirouette Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I can't believe no one has commented on this song before! It's just the most angelic sound i've ever heard besides perhaps sigur ros. It feels to me like a sort of gospel song really. 'come lay down in the water' (reminds me of baptism), 'we're all sons and daughters', 'rest your head on the altar' (a church reference possibly?) and 'these silent offerings' (perhaps prayer) for me all have religious connotations. If not that, then to me it sort of has a feeling of a loss of childhood and innocence and growing up into an adult. |

| IAMX – Spit It Out Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think this song is about trying to have another relationship with your ex, like giving it another go. 'The past is weakness Don't beg the question when the answer is war There are moments when I'm overcome' this is the stand out line in the song. It says that you shouldn't go backwards (ie. go back to a relationship that didn't work out the first time around), you should only move forwards. It says don't even think about trying to salvage what you can't fix, because it'll just make an even bigger problem. The last line of the stanza just says how overcome he is by being without his ex. |

| Secret And Whisper – Werewolves Lyrics | 17 years ago |

I can't believe no one has commented on this great song. I haven't heard a song this good in months. This is the best band i've heard since circa survive, and incidently, i thought it was anthony green's vocals when i first heard this song. I have no real idea what this song is about, but it sounds wanting to take a rest after difficult times in life. |

| LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think this song is either about death, or about the death of someone's therapist, or the inability to see them anymore. I think that if it were to be about death, it's probably death by cancer, especially lung-cancer from smoking. 'To tell the truth I saw it coming, The way, you were breathing.' that line shows that the narrator new that the person was probably going to get cancer, as they could tell from their difficulty in breathing (or smoker's cough) If it's about someone who's died, it's probably about a mother or father figure of some form. The phone call that the narrator receives is probably the first contact he's had with the person for several years, due to an unresolved feud. 'You're smaller than my wife imagined, Surprised, you were human.' I believe that line refers to the physical size of the person. The wife may have never seen the caller (mother, father, therapist or whoever) before, and the size of the person is different than the narrator had explained to her. This, i believe, is a good indicator the person is probably very old, and has actually shrunk in height, as people do when they get older (especially if they have illnesses like cancer). The narrator realizes that his chance to reconcile his relationship with the person has now passed, then the line 'Too late, for beginnings.' If the song is about a therapist how has died or is dying, the reference to 'arguments in the basement' is probably a metaphor for a therapy room. 'I wish that we could talk about it, But there, that's the problem. With someone new I couldn't start it,' These lines clearly show that although he wants to keep talking to his therapist, he can't, but he can't start anew with another therapist. Again, if the therapist is dying (as is suggested by the second stanza) he is probably dying of lung cancer or similar. |

| Manic Street Preachers – Fragments Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| LittleBabyNothing - i agree with you that this is probably another 'Richey' song. I actually think quite a few of the songs from LifeBlood are about Richey, including 'I Live to Fall Asleep' (when did you become another distant friend, everyone who loved you stay waited till the end) and i'm fairly sure Nicky has said 'Cardiff Afterlife' was a song about Richey. | |
| Placebo – Blind Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this song is about some kind of substance abuse, or other obsession fucking up a relationship and i'm really surprised no one else has picked up that when Brian says 'blind', in the context of the song he probably means blind as in blind drunk, or wasted. If anyone has seen Requiem for a Dream, i think this song is basically the perfect description for Harry and Marion's relationship and how despite the fact they want to make things right, their dependency on drugs is more important than their feelings for each other. |

| Placebo – Second Sight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
First off, the chorus lyrics are "but i would break backsides for you" not "that i would break back nights for you" I really think it's just about being in a relationship with the wrong person. "Walk away to save your face You never were a genius" We all know Brian is a really intelligent person, and it seems like the person (remembering that it could be a girl or a guy) he is singing to isn't on the same level. Alternatively it could be him singing to himself, saying 'wake up, this will never work' "Walk away to save your face You never were an actor Walk away to save your face Here comes the morning after" I think this is about trying to smooth over the problems, but all the problems coming out anyway. "Yes it's just the second night But i would break backsides for you Yes i know you're the jealous type 'Cause I'm cursed with second sight" I think this is really about the narrator realizing that he's somewhat infatuated with the person, but that it can't work out. I think "walk away" is repeated so much because it;s really just him realizing he needs to walk away from a relationship that won't work out. |

| Imogen Heap – Meantime Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I'm pretty sure the actual lyrics are: The purity in dreaming The mean time as a quarantine suppose there is no difference and phone sex is eternal love the promise in our yearning the mean time is a quarantine and the body parts can mix and you fail to make a whole and you'll only find out if this one's love once you've tried out another and you'll only find out if this one's love so take my heart in the meantime will the next love be the real one will the next love be the real one our dreams in holding patters and the mean time is a quarantine and I'm the one comparing by having you tonight and you'll only find out if this was love caressing some other lover and you'll only find out if this was love so take my heart in the meantime will the next love be the real one will the next love be the real one in sexual positions we never got to try and I I see lovers in the swing door entangled, in space and you'll only find out if this one's love once you've tried out another and you'll only find out if this one's love so take my heart in the meantime and you'll only find out if this was love caressing some other lover and you'll only find out if this was love so take my heart in the meantime will the next love be the real one will the next love be the real one will the next love be the real one will the next love be the real one will the next love be the real one will the next love be the real one This song is basically about the distinction between loving sex, and meaningless sex (ie sex in a relationship, and random hook-up sex). It's also about how people take relationships for granted,, and don't realize what they have until they don't have it. In this case, the subject only realizes what they had in the relationship when they engage in meaningless sex. |

| Björk – Undo Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I actually believe this song is about losing your virginity, and all the nervousness and awkwardness that accompanies it. Considering the album Vespertine deals a lot in things to do with sex, i think it's also likely. "It's not meant to be a strife It's not meant to be a struggle uphill" "You're trying too hard Surrender Give yourself in" "It's warmer now Lean into it Unfold Unfold in a generous way Surrender" All these lines, i believe, deal with how people often are tense and nervous upon losing their virginity and Bjork is really just saying 'relax'. "To share Me To share me" "If you're bleeding Undo And if you're sweating Undo If you're crying, darling Undo Undo Oh I Unravel" I think these two sets of lines really reinforce my idea. I think the song particulary deals with the issue from the perspective of a woman. P.S I don't think these lyrics are entirely correct as they're different from the CD jacket. |

| My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I agree with a lot of what some people have said about this song. I personally think the song can be taken two different ways. The first is of a suicidal person in general, and the second is of the 'patient' who is the running theme in this album. For the suicidal person, i think this song is him kind of looking back in retrospect. 'Now I know That I can’t make you stay But where’s your heart But where’s your heart But where’s your... I know There’s nothing I could say To change that part To change that part To change...' I think that's from the perspective of his love/family/friends, in that they're absolutely distraught that he'd commit suicide and wish he'd have stayed. 'So many Bright lights been cast a shadow But can I speak? Well is it hard understanding I’m incomplete The life that’s so demanding I get so weak And all their souls are burning I can’t speak' This is the person qualifying what his has done, sort of giving a reason for commiting suicide, and saying that his life is horrible, and he can't do anything about it, and more than that, he doesn't feel he can tell anyone his problems ('i can't speak') 'I am not afraid to keep on living I am not afraid to walk this world alone' This is the person saying that they're not afraid to live, in a sense they just choose not to. 'Honey if you stay, I’ll be forgiving' Again from the perspective of the friends/family. 'Nothing you can say can stop me going home' He's assuring them that nothing's going to change his mind. 'Can you see My eyes are shining bright Cause I’m out here On the other side Of the jet black Broken mirror And I’m so weak Well is it hard understanding I’m incomplete A love that's so demanding I get weak' He's in hell for commiting suicide, but he still says that in a sense, this is ok, because his life was so horrible. 'These bright lights have always blinded me These bright lights have always blinded me I said' This can either be seen as people in the world who have good lives, and are happy, and he's jelous of this, or as the fires of hell. 'I see you lying next to me With words I thought I’d never speak Awake and unfraid Asleep or dead' I think this is a metaphor, for the point after his suicide, where his 'soul would leave his body, and he realises he's not afraid of death. His suicide note is beside him, and now it seems trivial ('I see you lying next to me, With words I thought I’d never speak'). In terms of the patient, following the lines of what some others have said, it's basically about the patient realizing his death is imminent and not being afraid any, and his love/friends/family realizing that they can't do anything about it, but also realizing how much they will miss him. |

| Frou Frou – Breathe In Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I think this song is about drugs. 'and you - breathing in - finesse an innocent from her partying' I think that refers to the actual taking and the partying is relating to a party environment 'and I'm high enough from all the waiting to ride a wave on your inhaling' I think that means she's been having to take mediocre drugs and is waiting for the person to get her some stronger stuff. 'cause I love you no? can't help but love you, no...' she can't help but love them because they help her get the drugs, but she doesn't really love them, it's just a selfish relationship. 'what - part of no - don't you understand - I've told you before to just get - off my case - this isn't happening - stop this now and I - where was I? - I have to be somewhere now where did I put it?' That refers to the dilema of her not being able to supply the person she is singing to with drugs which would clearly cause a very tense, angry situation. 'now where did i put it' makes it obvious. 'is this it - is this it - is this it?' she isn't satisfied with the amount of drugs |
