Actually, I see this as a break up song. Perhaps it doesn't help that I'm in the middle of one at the moment, but idea that things aren't going great- (the whole first verse speaks to how he's lonely, not happy- he has songs to sing, but he can hardly speak). And then the chorus goes on to how he (and I) feels separated from reality. Its a relief, but its a painful relief. |

Agreed. I love how epic it sounds, much like AVA, but at the same time, it retains that Boxcar quality, and you're absolutely right, Travis rips on this song. I definitely agree its relating (at least in part) to DJ AM. |

I also heard this song at the end of The End is Here. I fall asleep to music, and I listened to this, and I fell asleep through most of it, and then woke up right as they started to sing Silent Night, and it was such a remarkable thing, so beautiful.
I don't believe in a greater power, I never have, but I can't help but to appreciate this amazing band, and the connection of the voices in Amazing Grace and Silent Night at the end of the album are just so magical feeling. Its fantastic.
Also, one of the best ska bands I've ever heard. |

I see this song has someone watching a loved one destroy their own life with drugs/alcohol. It torments them (the watcher) because he knows that he's essentially powerless to stop the cycle, and just keeps warning his loved one (who "still wonders why" his/her life is a mess) that "its all over" for them.

To me, it sounds more like its about coping with death, rather than being afraid of it. And death could be anything- its end of life in the song, but it could easily be also something like the end of a long relationship (which might feel like death).
Maybe the boyfriend is comforting his girlfriend- they're breaking off the relationship, but the boyfriend is doing his best to comfort the girl.
"Little Death makes life more meaningful"- he's telling her the death of the relation can be made into something meaningful, maybe a lesson.
"I stand no chance at all", he's [hypocritically, in some senses] accepting defeat- maybe accepting his own defeat in an effort to make his girlfriend feel better about the situation. |

Actually the Nazi SS was NOT secret service. The Nazi secret service was called the Gestapo, and they were often dressed in civilian clothing.
"SS" stands for Schutzstaffel, meaning "Protective Squadron". They started as a personal guard organization, but then became the elite of the military.

And I can understand Misty's enticement of "SS whore". Its almost a symbol of being elite. An SS whore wouldn't "serve" non SS. Being elite gives power. And from a male point of view, hot women with power are sexy. It really has little to do with actually being Nazi at all. |

Oh, and by the way, my thoughts on the meaning..
I think its not *so* much the decline of civilization, but rather the decline of any real "morality" of religion. (I'm not saying religion ever had any morality, but bare with me). I think it's along the same lines as Every Sunday, that people use religion, themselves and revering Jesus as a way to make themselves "good people".
Walmart represents capitalism at its finest, and in this song, its explaining how Jesus is just another day, another dollar, and it really just doesn't have a meaning beyond "I believe in Jesus, therefore, I MUST be a good person".
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this from a religious point of view, not that Jesus is any better than another day, another dollar (depends on your "beliefs" I guess), but really that the bottom line is that people are hypocritical, and make a habit of doing generally "good" things as a way to make up for things they know they're not doing good with.
In other words, its like confessing to sins that you're going to just go and commit again. |

Smile Empty Soul ranks up with my top 3 favorite bands. They're really an amazing band. At first, I thought this song was kind of mediocre, especially for them. However, its grown on me immensely. Its a really thoughtful song, and it sounds really good. I can't wait for Vultures to come out.

Its kinda funny that people think "I need a girl that I can train" is sexist. Really, it goes both ways; there are guys AND girls that "train" their partners (in a relationship) to do or not do things. Society also "trains" us to do certain things. For instance, society trains us to open the door for people.
