Coldplay – Clocks Lyrics 20 years ago
I discovered a very distinct U2 influence in this song, both in melody and in quality. "It's a strong album; you can feel, hear, and touch the blood, sweat, and tears behind each song, and that's exactly what Coldplay were going for." All I can hear is tears in this song, I don't think it was an effort to produce Clocks.
I really don't see why most people rave on about the piano and percussion, because those were probably the simplest parts of the song. The piano doesn't go beyond 3 fingers, even I can play it (I never played the piano). Basically the melody is like lkj lkj lk kjh kjh kj kjh kjh kj jhg jhg jh (on a computer keyboard), which could easily be pre-set on a keyboard so the player won't have to worry about anything anymore. For the guitars, I can only distinguish 3 different strings in the best case, they might as well be 3 different notes on the same string. The percussion doesn't go further than a simple theme comparable to the keyboard, with background cymbals which get emphasized later on in the song.
For the vocals, probably the most complex part... well, most of the song I hear something like 'ooooooooh aaaaaaah' and after having a look at the lyrics I found out the singer was actually attempting 'You are' in a teary way. Which brings us to the lyrics, the actual point of this site. There really isn't much to them for the most part because the lines are basically the same, only the first and third verse distinguish themselves by diversity and actually telling a part of some story. I think the story is about a wrong decision in life which is beyond the control of the protagonist to repair. He begs for someone else, possibly a god, to do it and is prepared to go a long way to get it done. There might even be a reference to the Medea myth, which could explain the third verse, the god would be Hades. If so, the protagonist could be the dead person or the living one, this remains unclear because the lyrics refer to "Gonna come back and bring you home". This could imply the protagonist himself is dead, but it could also be his loved one, which leaves us with "back". The cure/disease part could explain the trip out of the Hades, where it is still unclear if they will succeed or not.
After having come up with this explanation a lot of lines from the first verse seem to make sense all of a sudden, the "Lights go out and I can't be saved" meaning either the protagonist or a loved one died and went to the Hades, "tides that I tried to swim against" being the Styx, the tigers being Hades' dog and someone is begging, possibly even sacrificing his own life for the dead one.
It seems to make some sense, but I think only the songwriter could explain this, although that would defeat the purpose of this site. Maybe it's just a random story which sounds cool and my taste for complex (progressive) music overestimates the mainstream music nowadays. No way to tell, which keeps things interesting.
