Fountains of Wayne – These Days Lyrics 17 years ago
There are a ton of Fountains of Wayne B-sides that only grow on me after I've listened to them a few times, and this is one of them. I really love the last two lines.

Jon Foreman – The House Of God, Forever Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is basically a rehash of Psalm 23:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He causes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even when I walk in the valley of darkness, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff-they comfort me. You set a table before me in the presence of my adversaries; You anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. May only goodness and kindness pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for length of days.

I like it, though.

The Spill Canvas – The Tide Lyrics 20 years ago
OK. Not like my opinion means anything in the scheme of everyone else's, but here goes:

In the song, being on the beach is waiting to fall in love, or being open to falling in love. The mother is there watching her three kids as they all make different attempts to find the meaning of love: "eager to learn, to be taught and to teach." However, the father is no longer with them, and apparently he left the mother. Therefore, the mother is "bed-ridden" because she chooses not to fall in love again. She has shut that part of life out. For this reason, she is no longer on the beach and cannot show her kids how to act.

Hence the three kids are left on the beach to fend for themselves. With no mother there to show them the right way, they all fail at discovering love's true meaning and are all swept away by the tide. Presumably they all are caught by different pitfalls, but in the end, none of the three are able to find love.

//He's wondering what love is and why it has to end...//
