| The Smiths – I Don't Owe You Anything Lyrics

I share the feelings of butterflykiss on this underrated song. One of the better tracks on a very good first album.
I think the point of view shifts back and forth line by line between a young Morrissey and his female interest (more interested in him than he is in her, for obvious reasons). For instance, she is the one saying "Did I really walk all this way?" And he is the one saying "I don't owe you anything." |

Best song on the best album ever. It sounds to me like being in NYC at night on shrooms with a friend. It sounds like he fell and broke his arm but it didn't spoil the night. It's hard to interpret these lyrics. |

This song isn't as bad as some of you are letting on. It's simply a song where the dude wants to have sex with his friend. And the dude is nice enough to the friend to think about it before making a rash decision. There's no more to it than that. |

Maybe my favorite song of all time. The lyrics really touch me. The singing is brilliant. The music is subtly brilliant too. |

I think this song is a half-joke, like "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now." Yes, the music is more serious, but the lyrics are so over the top that I cannot take them totally seriously. Very, very good song. It's not that I don't think Morrissey was depressed. I just think he was consciously being morose for amusement. |

I think it's pretty clearly a child singing about a much older man molesting him. "People said you were virtually dead, but they were so wrong!" I honestly don't see another reasonable maning. |

I think sixtyfps is right. Sweet name is David (see the religious reference?), an atheist. And the speaker in the song seems to be David's new lover. She prays to God to help her deal with the situation. Later she decides she's going to actively try to change it, presumably by persuading David to believe (she's trying to change the scheme of things). It doesn't work, so she goes back to praying and worrying that she'll lose her faith (It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself--meaning safer than Egypt was for Moses, but she's still worried). |
