Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Mercy Seat Lyrics 20 years ago
i believe that the album this song belongs to (Tender Prey) its mostly about guilt and sin. The song immediately after this, that's called Up jumped the devil, its all about being "doomed from the start", doomed to live a life of guilt. So i suppose the central theme of the song is the ambiguity between guilt and innocence, but probably what Cave was trying to suggest was that no one is innocent. The character is, indeed, trying not to be afraid of death, but this depends on him being either convinced to be innocent or guilty. Only if he thinks himself innocent he can go boldly toward his death

Tom Waits – That Feel Lyrics 20 years ago
There's something in life that's bigger that any meaning or scope that we give to it. We live and do our things but this something keep knocking at our door and it cant let us just live.

Bruce Springsteen – Blinded By The Light Lyrics 20 years ago
To dewdrop: I hope you are joking. It is "blinding as the light" that this song is built barely on sound, rhyme, and a dylan-like hallucinated set of images.

Bob Dylan – Isis Lyrics 20 years ago
I love this song not so much for the lyrics themselves, which are pretty pointless, even if funny, except for some lightspot as the dialogue between Isis and he who speaks. But I exceedingly adore THE WAY he sing it, the way he let out every single sound. Some of my favourites are the pronounciation of RECKLESS and the way he singls "WELL I GUESS" insisting on the Ls. i think Dylan here is showing his love for every word.

Bob Dylan – Boots of Spanish Leather Lyrics 20 years ago
referring to thisisfalse's opinion, which sounds pretty new to me, I used to think that the final line was a metaphor meaning that the lover who's not left will no longer wait but go away (that's the reason why he/she should need the boots), and coherently I perceived the last three verses as imbued with grief and resentment. That incidentally is more appropriate to Dylan i think. But reading your comment I saw a completely new possibility

did anyone notice the passage from third person to first in the last verse?

Bob Dylan – Mississippi Lyrics 20 years ago
I'll shortly comment. I love this song partly because is one example of the dialectic between the previous Dylans album Time out of mind and the one from wich this song is taken, a dialectic which is set in terms of basic feelings and attitude. If TOOM, expecially in songs like Not Dark Yet and Highlands, was the record of an old man, approaching to death, and the basic feeling is quiet desperation, this instead is the song of a man who feel that in the end, life is really worthwile. That he expresses with wonderful words such as:

Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast
I'm drownin' in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me

and above all

Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now

That, said from a 60 years old man, is deeply moving. He still had to pass through a great amount of sufference and humiliation (i love this: "Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees/Feeling like a stranger nobody sees"), and this is showed by the consistent use of apocalyptic imagery, (that is almost a Dylan trademark), even if with a humorous falvour i think . But the prevailing emotion is love of life. It makes me cry

The Smiths – Pretty Girls Make Graves Lyrics 20 years ago
I think this song is not about his homosexuality but his tremendous and almost pathological shyness. Infact, the line "Nature played this trick on me" follows the line "I've could have been wild and i've could have been free", not "I've could have loved women". But does anyone figure out what does the title exactly means? Why "pretty girls make graves"?
