| Pet Shop Boys – Only The Wind Lyrics | 17 years ago |

That's weird. I'm sure I visited this site last year and discovered the meaning of this song on this very page. All but one comment has since been deleted. This song is about domestic violence. The wind being the unpredictable rage that suddenly develops from the partner you love. And dies just as quickly. It's a sensitive subject and I think it was brave to write the lyrics from the point of view of the aggressor. To me, it makes the song more poignant and emotional. In the first three verses there are several denials, and I get the feeling it's mainly due to the shame associated rather than malice and the intention of causing more harm. In the last verse there is admittance and a hint that the character in the song is going to deal with the problem. Then there is the final line, which is particularly difficult to listen to when you consider the context. |

This song is one of my all-time favourites. With lines like, "Kiss the changes that shape my life," it's incredibly positive and defiant. For me (no insider knowledge here) the song offers support to overcome adversity. Accepting pain and hurt and turning them into strength and character: "All these scars are mine", "The gift you gave is gonna last forever". |

I love this song, beyond the nostalgia that it congers up from my childhood. But, to throw a fly into the ointment ... I saw this song played on TOTP2 and the information they gave about the song was that it's the story of a biographer who couldn't bring himself to write the truth about his subject - someone who had skeletons in the closet (hence references to thrills & pills and the lyric "why do I find it hard to write the next line"). They even mentioned names - the name of the person who the biographer was writing about - but I'll be damned if I could remember who they said it was. For me, though, this angle would belie the dreamy nature of the music. |

Sting talked about this song and played part of it, acoustic, on Parkinson's chat show (on the last series for the BBC, I think). He wrote the song while sitting on the porch/veranda of Ian Flemming's house. The inspiration came from thinking about the life-style and emotions that someone like James Bond (or any professional spy) must go through. Thus the references to spying. The song is clearly about spying on someone, for what purpose is not clearly defined in the lyrics and is open to personal interpretation. |
