Radiohead – Just Lyrics 20 years ago
ant 292 is right, completely different chords than 'smells like teen spirit'. The song doesn't need decoding, it's pretty obvious. If you look at the first comment made in the posts it says it all. What's interesting to me is how people have read the video, which I'd have to say in a world of forgettable random imagery, this clip stands out for being memorable. Although I would never try to guess what was actually said (because I don't think anything was actually said) I have always thought that the message was one of 'if you don't want pain in this world, lie still'

I don't think Radioheads song titles are that cryptic, although their obvious fondness for all things Zeppelin would contradict that.

Ordinarily xxxpnkrokxxx I would agree. Were it not for the name of the song and the lyrics you'd have a point. The phrase 'paranoid android' is not utilitarian, i.e., unlike 'clear blue sky' or 'road kill'. If paranoid android was in the general lexicon, you would really have something.

Oasis – Champagne Supernova Lyrics 20 years ago
In fact, everything wrong about western culture is embodied by this song. i.e., it's sound-bite chanting that won't stand up to scrutiny.

Oasis – Champagne Supernova Lyrics 20 years ago
This has a great beatlish melody (sorry Oasis fans, I know some of you hate the comparison but..face facts) I totally believe they wrote this about nothing. This is the major problem with Oasis. All their songs are songwriting exercises. If the tune to 'Yesterday' had come to Noel or Liam, instead of Paul McCartney, it would not have progressed beyond 'scrambled eggs' I'm sorry, but to me Oasis is a bunch of great tunes waiting for a lyric. Obviously they have nothing to say.

The Cowboy Junkies – Sweet Jane Lyrics 20 years ago
I think Lou Reed preffered this version, which will tell you that the man knows 'good' when he hears it. And it's about drug addiction, tsllimit, sorry to burst your bubble.

The Cowboy Junkies – Southern rain Lyrics 20 years ago
I think the reference of southern rain pertains to 'southern wetness' if you catch my drift. It's ostensibly a song about how wonderful sex can be for a woman.

The lyrics that I am looking at are accurate.

"in pitch dark i go walking in your landscape.
broken branches trip me as i speak."

Clearly he hasn't done this before, and it's the ragged road of infidelity that will bring him undone, which he knows.

"just coz you feel it doesnt mean its there.
just coz you feel it doesnt mean its there."

This is an assurance from him that any feelings they may have, may not be real.

"There's always a siren
Singing you to shipwreck
(Don't reach out, don't reach out
Don't reach out, don't reach out)
Stay away from these rocks
We'd be a walking disaster
(Don't reach out, don't reach out
Don't reach out, don't reach out)"

The Homeric reference is immediate; If I follow my insincts (which is to be drawn in by beauty) I will suffer.

"just coz you feel it doesn't mean its there.
(theres someone on your shoulder)
just coz you feel it doesn't mean its there.
(theres someone on your shoulder)"

No longer singing to her, but himself.

"why so green and lonely?
and lonely
and lonely
heaven sent you to me
to me
to me"

Despite all of his warnings to himself, he's now starting to justify why it should happen.

"we are accidents
waiting waiting to happen.
we are accidents
waiting waiting to happen."

Finally he surrenders to fate, he can no longer justify keeping himself or her apart.

It's about a guy who is about to have an affair, but he's undecided. What is so friggin hard, people? Talk about a bunch of soup gazers!

Just as an aside, for anyone who is interested, I've read about 15 posts that say this song is just a random bunch of lyrics. Might I suggest this kind of 'rationale' is lazy.

Radiohead – Paranoid Android Lyrics 20 years ago
Okay, other opinions notwithstanding, you could nail this entire song to Marvin from HHGTG as being a part of his mental state. It's his entire life.

Marvin's demise comes during a rainstorm on a miserable planet whilst reading the last message from God, which was: We Apologise For The Inconvenience.

Marvin's opinion of the corporation that built him was that when the revolution came, they would be first against the wall.

In HHGTG there is a breed of pig who can talk and whose sole ambition is to be eaten.

Marvin, being depressed, never thinks much of other people's opinions, most specifically because he's smarter than everyone else...he has the brain the size of a planet.

But I think it's the 'rain down' bit that clinches it, or maybe it's a complete coincidence that they have described Marvin's demise, with the last line being, 'God loves his children.'

From Douglas Adams' pen, Marvin is a sadly comedic creature who is born depressed, lives for about 40 billion years (30 million of which are spent parking cars), and only moments before he dies he has his only positive thought.

That's Adams' part. Radiohead have seen Marvin as the perfect metaphor for trying to live the quiet life, just get along, but is constantly placed up against life and all of it's messiness.

Anyway, that's my take.
