first of all, it IS 'toe the line', because that is an expression in itself which means "to do what is expected of you, meet a standard, or abide by the rules" i definitely agree that this song perfectly describes imprisonment/confinement |

i think the entire song is summed up in the line "i hung my favorite shirt on the floorboard, wrinkled up from pulling pushing tasting....tasting" it just means that although he had fun with the girl, she led him astray from what he already was. |

favorite lines....... 'in the end i win every time as ink remains' he's a songwriter, he wins because in the end all that remains is a song written in ink. he feels at least somewhat accomplished in this disaster if he can still make music 'tracing the plot finds: skin touching skin. absence follows." it means that if you look down the story line, she only wanted to be physical with him, and then leave. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Soul Meets Body Lyrics | 20 years ago |

my first thought was, 'this song is about heaven.' "the silence" would be, well, death. but the more i listen, i have to think 'where does soul meet body?' right here. in our atmosphere. right here where you can love and be loved by others, and by the sun ...and be clean and new, and even in the dirt find something of more value than what might be obvious. you have to dig for it with your bare hands. and i think he's dreaming of one day reaching this place, where he can be new again, where soul meets body, where his thoughts lie. but for now he's got to reserve his thoughts and focus on finding a way out. the silence will take him there. |
