I think "the trapeze act" Beam refers to is a metaphor for life. Trying to swing high to heaven; swinging back and forth between heaven and hell through our choices. "The trapeze act was wonderful / but never meant to last." Life was wonderful, but everyone has to die sometime. If the author is in fact the one who died, he's trying to comfort the girl he loved. Thanking her for making his life wonderful, but telling her that it had to end. I aw the song performed live last night at the Variety Playhouse here in Atlanta. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen or felt at a show before. |

The main point is that he can't be with the person he's completely in love with. Whether it's drugs or other relationships that are keeping them apart, it doesn't really matter. All that matters is that they can't be together. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Elliott Smith is so amazing. RIP |
