the biblical references are fairly deliberate i think. i'm not sure about rocky's views on faith or anything, but it seems to me that he's describing growing up around the church or at least in a situation where people of influence were arrogant and abused their position. he's describing pharisees when he talks about the "carnival of counterfeits." this is literal and figurative, in that this is exactly how christ is treated and its how rocky feels when he comes up against these types of people, yet he knows exactly who he is and where he stands. rocky knows exactly where his strength comes from, whether he's being deliberate with his audience or not about what/whom that is. |

its no real secret that ben is a Christian, and i'd say he's dropping a subtle hint that Christ is the one road to freedom. the fact that he mentions conflicting emotions is the struggle to continue to walk that path, as well as acknowledging that this life when lived in full is very difficult. |

it seems fairly simple (yet profound). it's about watching what you say and meaning what you say. how often are people quick to say things like 'i love you' when in reality they don't actually understand what love is. telling someone 'forever' and meaning forever is a declaration and a promise and it is easy to say these things when things are going well and seem perfect, but what about when things get tough? i think ben is simply saying 'i won't say certain things until i know i will keep that promise' |
