Great Lake Swimmers – Your Rocky Spine Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the poster that said they think that this song is meant to sound like exploring a lover's body, when it's just about really liking going hiking. A very sexy nature song.

Tommy James And The Shondells – Crimson and Clover Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, Crimson and Clover is about the power of one's own imagination. I feel the speaker sees a beautiful young girl and immediately begins thinking up a world of things to do with her.

The Magnetic Fields – In My Secret Place Lyrics 20 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs. It's a shame that nobody has commented on it.

This song is about seeing the beauty within yourself, while the world is miserable cold and gray, and even when it tries to be flashy and distracting.

The singer sees that everything around him is fading, and that the true beauty is within himself. In the second half of the song, the message is the same, knowing that even if the outside world if flashy and pretty - it is still robbing you. The only true, lasting, beauty comes from within his heart.

Nine Inch Nails – Only Lyrics 20 years ago
To me, "Only" is about Reznor singing to, well "Nine Inch Nails". This creation that created him has also turned him into something he is not and he now sees what he has become.

"I can see right through myself"

He sees that everything it has brought him has only hurt him more, the project's original intent to voice his inner pain.

"I just made you up to hurt myself"

He realizes that this thing has driven people and loved ones away from him, even though it has given him so much else. He no longer seeks the satisfaction that it once brought him and is more concerned about his own health and well being.

"Less concerned about fitting into the world
Your world that is
Cause it doesn't really matter any more
(no it doesn't really matter anymore)
No it doesn't really matter any more
None of this, really matters any more

Yes I'm alone, then again I always was
As far back as I can tell
I think maybe it's because you were never really real "

He screams in desperate realization to his creation that he can no longer seem to control...

"There is no you there is only me"

Even referencing the beginning of his career - the first major NIN single, "Down In It", he notes the beginning of his creation's dominance over his life.

"Well the tiniest little dot caught my eye
And it turned out to be a scab"

He has become everything he wanted through his creation, but now wishes only not to have done any of it, if just to be where he was before.

"Now I am somewhere I am not supposed to be
And I can see things I know I really shouldn't see
And now I know why, ya now I know why
Things aren't as pretty, on the inside"

Seeing his creation for what it is, he seeks to assert his dominance over it, and the addictions it has brought him. "With Teeth" marked a major milestone in his life - becoming his own person, free of his addictions - one of them being the way he previously viewed the band.
