I think there's definitely an environmental connection. Andrew Bird's tour has gone green and he was making a pretty big deal about donating to become carbon neutral, etc. |

Before he played this song live a couple of days ago (which was AMAZING, Dosh tore it up) he said it was just about breakfast. I'm pretty sure that was a massive understatement. |

So many memories associated with this song. It's absolutely beautiful and easily my favorite song of all time. As of this posting I'm on my 131st listen. Holy jesus. I'm still not tired of it. |

Yeah, there's definitely a nice little allusion to rape in there, but I don't think Travis is being serious at all.
I really don't think this is a sex-crazed maniac. Come on guys. You've all felt like this at some point in your life. Just come out and admit it. |

I don't know that the protagonist in this song is specifically going out of his way to avoid ties, but that he is untied and lost and lonely and doesn't make the effort to make the ties because they just aren't coming to him. It's typical post-collegiate depression after being a part of something as rich and constantly active as collegiate life, being out on your own with no friends, working temp jobs to make a living will make anyone feel lost, alone, and confused. And I think your Spider in the Snow theory is dead on, PBCrunch. |

Aldrous Huxley is just name dropped as an example of a utopian society that was explored in Brave New World in which there was no pain, only pleasure which is a similar theme to this song. I don't believe that this song was written specifically about it in any way. |

It looks like it goes from the tilt of Earth all the way down to a single person finally realizing just how insignificant he or she is. |

It seems very ironic to me. The fan is commenting on how the frontman gets everyone reaching for his autograph and the band is behind him, people are cheering, his performance is great, but then the fan, who actually is lonely, goes home and plays a song in which the frontman deplores his loneliness. But the way its sang it seems like there's no ill will between the fan and frontman. I guess even though the fan realizes the frontman isn't really lonely, he doesn't care and just wants the musical equivalent to what he's feeling. This is a great song either way. |

This seems to be sort of about a search for the truth, at least on it's most basic level. I mean, as much as I dislike like the line "Some nights the blood from real cuts feels real nice when it's really mine" it seems like he's falling back on that as something that's true. And later on after describing the drive and setting up the scene he's talking about trying whoever he's talking to to prove he or she is not lying and is further augmented by the "'Cause there's nothing quite like the blinding light that curtains cast aside" line and the "You can't hide"s which seems to be saying 'You can't hide from the truth.'
Of course, I have no clue what a lot of the rest is saying, but I think I'll just regard it as fluff to make my points seem more valid. ;) |
