Dishwalla – Counting Blue Cars Lyrics 19 years ago
I always figured this song was about a sick child; there's not enough information to figure out who the child is to the narrator. The child's asking about God because he/she is dying, but the way it's portrayed in this song doesn't show any fear at all.

"How our shoes make hard noises in this place
Our clothes are stained
We pass many, cross eyed people"

I believe they're in a church. Hard floors, "stained" clothes would be the stained glass casting colours onto them, and in several cultures, icons are cross-eyed because it is considered spiritual, showing less focus on reality and more on "god" or the soul.

I'm not Christian myself, but that's never turned me away from this song. It's just gorgeous.

Thrice – Of Dust And Nations Lyrics 19 years ago
Their songs DO have lots of Biblical undertones and there isn't any way around that, but the songs were lyrically composed in such a way that they are accessible to anyone, and open to interpretation, and I think that's great. I do love all the Biblical references because, even though I'm not Christian whatsoever, I find a lot of the messages really powerful in themselves and they make the songs that much stronger.

Even though a lot of the references in the songs are obviously Christian, though, I don't think those are the messages he's trying to convey. I don't think something can be interpreted as "this or that part of the Bible". That's not an interpretation -- if you give that as your interpretation, you're just leading us to another piece of writing that can be infinitely interpreted. Get some imagination.
He uses these references, but I feel like there's a much bigger, more personal meaning behind them than something that can be attributed to just one religion, or a religion at all.

Thrice – Between the End and Where We Lie Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, I guess the way I've been interpreting this when I listen to it is completely different from anything people are saying on here.

I took "machines that feed on vacant eyes" to be television, computers, etc. Technology, basically, and how it keeps us in a "false reality".

So, from there, I figured he was going on about how we're being distracted from our actual lives by our technology, and how there are more and more new renovations, and commercials telling us that we need this and that to be happy, and we keep falling for it.
I mean, there's more to it than that, but coming from that theme, that's what I got from this song. :]

Thrice – Like Moths To Flame Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that Thrice probably isn't a Christian band, although a lot of their lyrics DO have biblical references. I think that whether you're Christian or not, the Biblical messages that they send with some of the songs are really powerful. I'm not Christian myself, and I still love even the ones that have blatant Christian references (like this one).
This song is definitely about what everyone else has been saying; from Peter's point of view. It's a really wonderful song and it gives me chills every time I hear it.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Little Birds Lyrics 19 years ago
I always thought that in the imagery throughout the song could double as his body actually BEING the river...

"Now there is another in the middle of my mouth
A hundred altogether within me now
Little bird, little bird, come into my body"

A river has a mouth, and is a body of water.

"Put you hand within me and you'll know what I'm feeling
I just want to swallow up and promise to protect them "
also makes me think of a river.

So it seems to go back and forth, but comparing his body to a river, I think.

Whether or not that's intentional, I enjoy listening to it with that interpretation. :]

It's a beautiful song.

Bright Eyes – Sunrise, Sunset Lyrics 20 years ago
I agree with blacklist -- I mean, the song could apply to anyone, but I myself am bipolar (not bragging. i'd never wish it on anyone.) and the song really hit home, for me, at least. I know bipolar is different for everyone... but this was really accurate. And things like this are hard to describe.

And questionable_cow, I agree with you about the line "You're a fool". Right on. D:
