when ever i listen to this song, it reminds me of an ex girlfriend of mine. especialy that first part
"you can't hide
behind social graces
so don't try
to be all touchy feely"
she would always try and be i dont know, like she would try and push the sexual parts of the relationship as far as she could because she thought that i wouldnt care because we were two girls. and i guess thats more acceptable with girls. i dont know. i always thought that the song was about a girl, but suppose that im wrong. |

| Andrew Bird – The Happy Birthday Song Lyrics

it almost seems as if he views death not as the end, but as a new begining. as if it is just another, if not your first, birthday.
this album appears to based more upon the meaning of life and death other than lonleness which seemed to theme wheather systems. i dont know... im just ramblilng... |

any how, that would prove phoenix's thoery to be correct. does anyone know if andrew belives in reincarnation? i was just wondering...
i also belive that this song refers to the narorator showing remorse for liveing a solitary life.
"and how, how i wish i, i had talked to them,
and i wish they fit into the plan" |

it truely is a beautiful song, and i agree with ludo142 about the lines looking like palidromes. i just love andrew, and i hove always considered him a genius.
there is a movie out called palindrome, (yes i know that this is compleatly unrelated to the overall topic, but i came to mind and i thought that you might be interested) and the main charachter, ava, is played by five different characters, including a six year old boy and a morbidly obese 17 year old girl. you never know when the actor is going to change and it takes a while to catch on. its very good, check it out. |

whoa, i cant belive that noone has commented on this song. well, it took me a bit of resaerch but i do know what this song i about. it needs to be broken down into three different sections. and they are scrambled within the song, so this may be quited difficult to understand/ explain. you first must understand that this is an extreamly spontainious song, and it accualy becomes quite depressing after you know its true meaning.
the first part is about a woman who is an alchoholic and ends up basicly drowning herself in alchohol
the second part is about a kid who was watching his older brother drinking a glass of milk by and open window, and then his brother is accedentaly shot in a drive by shooting, so his little brother thought that you should never drink a glass of milk while you stand in front of an open window or you would die.
* that is a true story
the third section is about this huge windstorm in chicago, and this piece of glass from a window got caut in the wind and just floated along in the wind like an and airplane, all across the city, and this woman was walking, and the glass hit her, and umm, well... lets just say that she died and leave it at that shall we?
*once again, a true story
so basicaly the song is about death, and the many unpredictable ways that it can happen to all of us without warning. |

i agree with deftnomad about the begining being about the two lovers who are in the photo strip, but i also think that it is showing through the photos that at the time that they where taken, the man already knows that she is cheating on him, and that she is compleatly obliviouse that he is aware of it, but he still loves her regardless, even though he knows, and he's just trying to ignore it. i belive that he eventualy confrants her, because he cant hold it in much longer, and she puts on a whole show and lies about how she only cheated once and it was a mistake and that she's sorry and says that it will never happen again("Said its okay I knew exactly what you meant,When you said you were an accident"). he nievly belived her, and set him self up in another situation where she can munipulate his trust in her and she cheats on him again. he finds that she left and he goes searching for her. |

listning to and experiencing elliotts music has always been emotional for me. when i listen to this album, i am brought to tears the majority of the time. i find that elliotts music will make you sad, but in superfluous manner, because it sends the message that it is okay to be sad, and that melacholy is not a bad thing. i feel that this album has saved my life. only a few years ago i when through an agonizing and personal ordeal, that sent me into a state of deppression. this was the only album that i could listen to. it was if every artist in the world had turned their back on me, with the exception of elliott. he did better for me than any ill-advised medication. he was my antidote. i never thought that i would ever say this, but i accualy pitty all of the preps in my school that listen to their rash and nonsensical pop, for the fact that they do not and most likey never will have the support of elliott smith durring their hardships. i say this because i have been spited by them for years due my eccentricity and "unusual" taste in musicians, especialy ones like elliott, ani difranco, frank zappa and the squirrel nut zippers. hey, what can i say? their loss. |

holly crap... i just read the article on elliott's death (thanks sublime245 :)) and was in shock. i have been looking for records of his suicide note for months, and i finnaly read it. i coldnt controll my self, and just started crying. i always start to cry when i read articles about his death. i must addmitt that i do feel bad for jennifer because she probably feels like she is responsible for his death, which she most likely was. i mean, in a medical sence, when you have a knife in you, especially near a vital organ, the number one thing that you dont do is take out the knife! mentaly, i do agree with thehumanresponce, but he had been depressed his entire life and according to jennifer he had been suicidal for several years. god i miss him.by the way, i am about ready to sue anti-records if they dont release the 15 remaining songs that were intended to be on from a basment on the hill. does any one know the meaning behind that phrase? i know that his first album was recorded in his basment, but that probably has nothing to do with it. |

im basicly neutral on the debate over the 'incident', but in responce to badge's last statement, "do what you have to do" could be refering to giving the child up for adoption, or possibly abortion. just a thought. |
