I love this song. 1st time I heard it was a coupke of days after my friend died. Heard it in the car while we went to the funeral home. It was one of his favorite songs. Ironically, he died on a Tuesday, which makes this song even more meaningful to me.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics	20 years ago
Like PunkinDrublic said early in this discussion, Wish You Were Here is about the war, that war being the Vietnam War, and the proof of this is in the line "Did you exchange, a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage". A great song regardless of the meaning.

One of the greatest songs ever composed. Coldplay puts so much passion into this song that it just comes out magic. This song is perfect for all occasion, whether your laying on your back with the love of your life gazing at the stars or remembering the victems of 9/11, whether it is played while you slow dance with your spouse on your wedding or it is played at your funeral, this song is right for any occasion. I don't think there is one sole meaning to this song. I think the song, like fine art, means different things to different people. Coldplay is just simply brilliant.
