I LOVE this song. It has to be one of my favorite Bright Eyes songs out of all of them. If you just look at the lyrics, the imagery, metaphors, and allusions used are amazing. Every line is filled with something to keep you interested in what is being said. The message of the song seems to be that everyone continues going about their lives without thinking about the fact that they're bound to this world and its limitations. |

Maybe he created the person the song is about to express his own ideas and gave him the name "John A. Hobson" because it fits the ideas presented in the song. |

I like the way a lot of people interpret the song, but there is one thing I've noticed that bothers me. I don't think "Set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell." means he WANTS us to do any of that or that he is showing his dislike for religion. If you'll notice, the rest of the song is a series of social statements about what we already do that he disagrees with. For example, when he says "We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul," he's not agreeing with having to memorize social security numbers and stripping ourselves of individuality and humanity. I think the statement "Set fire to the preacher who is promising us Hell" means that too often we attack religion as the source of our problems (knowing that even he wants to do it at times). In the next song on I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, "We Are Nowhere And It's Now," he continues to question himself. |
