For me, this is someone seeing a friend or loved one standing on the edge of depression, and wanting to help ("I'll put you to bed you can / Let it all go" and "I'll give you the time you deserve"). Seeing them fighting the misery with everything they've got ("you've been playing too rough lately"). Burning all the energy they've got left ("you burn too bright"), about to crash ("you're a tragedy starting to happen"). Saying to the people who want to help them that they'll be okay in time ("that dust is gonna settle your nerves"). I could go on like that with every line, but these are the lines I feel strongest about. This is such a beautiful song... |

The 'war' reminds me of a part of Johnette Napolitano's "Suicide Note", namely: 'And I wanted to believe You would win The war in your head That I did not understand' To me, this is about overcoming mental illness, how it can change you. And apparently, this person feels like he has lost a lot of himself on the way to 'recovery', like it was part of him, of his personality: 'As you can see, when you look at me, I'm pieces of what I used to be' and obviously 'Empty shell inside of me, I'm not myself, I'm a replica of me' |

These lyrics are really incredibly brilliant. I translated this song for someone and found out that, no matter how you translate, you lose a lot of the details that make this song so wonderful to hear and sing. Amazing song. |

I think it's about someone unable to accept that not everything can be explained through algebra/science... Here's my take on the whole thing: 'you may notice certain things before you die' Death itself cannot be explained (soul/personality), nor what happens after death (except for the biological process, ofcourse). I think the person is trying to analize their life, so the lyrics focuss on 'unexplainable things' in life... I agree with Greyshoes that it could also very well be meant sarcastically, which would explain the last sentence. I'm inclined to think it's a combination of the two explanations 'mail them to me should they cause your algebra to fail' Tell me what it is that can't be explained, what you can't find proof of, what 'flaws' your perfect theories 'cole and macey lost their eyes on the finer points' I don't think they literally lost their eyes, they stared themselved blind on facts that they could not mathematically/scientifically explain 'roll them up in coffee cake and dine' That line makes me wonder... But I think it means they're useless if they just focuss on proof and forget to live I might be way off here, but that's the feeling it gives me =) |
